The oil ocean boss destroyed me so many times. And I'm talking as Sonic.

The Metal Sonic boss is awesome. I can't believe so many of you dislike it.

Also you don't have to wait for the Silver Sonics to spin dash. Once they are in ball form hit them with the spin dash and the angle will almost always hit metal. It takes like 20 30 seconds to beat that phase doing that.

It's not a poorly designed fight and I don't know how lot of you can think that. It's probably the best fight Metal has ever had.

Best fight? Nah. The pacing for the fight is just weird because it's supposed to be fast paced but you're better off going slow until the spikes segment as it's easier to dodge his moves that way. To me the fight just feels awkward and it's not really intuitive either. I didn't even know he could be hit during the spikes segment initially and I thought you just had to somehow get him to hit the spikes or something. Especially since he was doing the same moves as when you couldn't hit him earlier.

To compare to CD, which fight makes it very clear you're to beat him in a race as Eggman will fry you otherwise.

The oil ocean boss can be tricky yeah but I didn't find him that bad with Knuckles. I never got insta-killed by it though. How does that happen exactly?

The technique's been mentioned, but I don't think it's been noted that the number of times you charge your dash affects the trajectory. I'm pretty sure I've gotten consistent hits by only hitting the button 2 or 3 times and then dashing into the bots as they curled up to charge, making that portion of the fight a breeze.

RE:Oil Ocean Boss: Can confirm. Was a bitch to fight as Knux. Though I only managed to lose three lives to it. My brother, on the other hand, got his first game over on that boss as Tails. I was never insta-killed by it though.

I actually loved the Metal sonic fight as Sonic. You don’t have to go slow to dodge his attacks, just abuse the hell out of drop dash and you just speed through the fight. It’s one of the best places to use drop dash nonstop. Not as much fun as Knuckles though his gliding kind of did the trick.

Okay look.

Go to the far left of the screen.

Wait for Silver sonic to come out and for it to start revving, which it WILL do if you're positioned as such.

Spindash into him, should hit Metal

repeat while dodging Metal's balls.

I did this part in like 12 seconds last time I tried.

@Vertigo: I agree with you on the pacing of the fight. I sort of figured it wouldn't be a straight race, because I had seen a spoiler screenshot that some idiot posted on Twitter, but I figured it would be more like a fairly long running segment, and then a final fight in the machine with maybe more than one phase or a variety of attacks. It was kind of surprising that was only part 1. A nitpick in the grand scheme really, but there's always room for improvement.

Fun tip: On the second phase, it's really easy to get many of your dropped rings back because the wall pushes the rings at you and any invincibility frames you have stops you from getting hurt.

Doesn't the drop dash require that one shield?

[up]Almost the opposite. When you have no shield or a non-elemental shield, jump and then press and hold the jump button while in mid-air.

This lives system is seriously starting to grind on me more.

I breezed through Hydrocity only to lose all my lives to Act's 2 boss. Now I have to do all that shit over again in an honestly boring and annoying water level just to fight the dumb boss again.

This isn't hard, it's fucking tedious.

Also, I died from drowning while waiting for an air bubble to spawn. Greaaaaat.

Yea, you sound like you're getting way too heated. It's a game based on a 90's platformer, I hate to say it, but it's not a game that you're simply going to breeze through, you actually have to be a bit methodical to succeed.

ANYWAY. I beat the game...with 2 Chaos Emeralds. So yea, you know what I got to do now.

Me too. That damn fourth third Chaos Emerald is a pain. No matter how fast I go I can barely even find the UFO, let alone catch it. It doesn't help that you can easily go through the race backwards (in fact, it feels like you're supposed to) - I don't know how that affects the UFO's movement.

Watch a video for the third one, you can easily get past it at mach 1-2

Just because it's based on a 90's platformer doesn't mean it needs to keep archaic holdovers from that era; you can still make a good Retraux game without stuff like a lives system. Also, I shouldn't have to be super methodical when playing a game that sells itself on letting you go fast, which is when I'm having the most fun.

A number of deaths have admittedly by my own fault and the diffiiculty isn't strictly an issue, but bullshit is still bullshit. Free time is harder to come by for me nowadays, and I don't appreciate it being pointlessly wasted by having to redo two entire levels to rematch a boss.

Sonic doesn't "let" you go fast...

You get the quickness from memorization...

If you don't know the level layout, you get punished for trying to rush...

Sonic level design follows the first rule of speed-running...

[up][up] I don't really know what to tell you then, the game is probably not for you then if you just want something casual that you can breeze through.

It's a game that rewards speed, and to get that speed, you need to understand layout of the level. That's all there is to it, it's not gonna hold your hand.

I'm not sure why IGOTTA DO BOTH ACTS ;[[[[[ is a problem now when that's been the case with Sonic games for like a long time, even in the Rush games this was true, If you game over'd you had to do both acts. I think this was the case with Sonic advance 1-2 as well. Not sure about 3.

Well I did it. It was hard. It wasn't always fun. But I managed to beat the blue sphere levels and get all the medals.

> blue sphere mode unlocked!

yeah no I had enough of that.

A big misconception about Sonic games is the idea you can just go fast your first try and speed through a level. Nope, memorization is the key, the games are built with replayability in mind, encouraging speedrunning, precise movement, and tricks to get that famous speed. It's a reward, not a right.

I wonder if people will be able to get the actual Debug Mode the devs used and not the babby toy they left on offer once Mania hits PC.

It's one of the most hilarious misconceptions about Sonic games. On a surface level, people just assume you can fast whenever you feel like. Then when they die, they call the game cheap because you can't simply hold right to win.
