I just stopped at 2:54 out of sheer WTF

It's one of those things that it makes me groan and groan some more as I hear it, but it also is so dumb I almost want to hear more.

Almost.

[up][up]Oh fucking hell it is.

The plot holes are also so numerous that it's less like a plot with holes and more like a void with shreds of plot floating about.

[up]Yeeup. Say what you will about the plots (or lack thereof,) of the classic Sonic games; at least they didn't assault the senses. Or matter. Which is preferable to the former when you get down to it.

Yeah, the Kintobor Origin is old news! But I think most of the plot sounds like standard time travel schlock, just overcomplicated by all the extraneous factions and councils.

So I've been trying out a full-3D fangame called Sonic World for the last couple of weeks now, and it's... complicated, to say the least.

Now, Cobanermani here may have made the game look actually pretty fun, but the truth is a bit more nuanced. The main draw of the game is that you've got 35 characters to choose from and up to 41 if you use mods, (even Princess Sally's an option if you use the right ones,) and each character plays pretty darn nicely. While most can still be divided into basic subsets of Speed, Flight, and Power ala Sonic Heroes, they'll all got enough differences to still have their own feels. For example, Sonic, Espio, and Mighty (yes, he's in this game, believe it or not,) all fit neatly into the speed category, with most of them being able to run pretty fast , do a homing attack, and use the light-speed dash. However, Sonic can kick the shit out of things and even do a long-range dropkick to boot, Espio can throw shurikens, turn invisible, and climb walls ala Knuckles, and Mighty's a brawler who also has a flutterkick that he can use to walljump ala Knuckles Chaotix. Everyone controls fairly nicely too, and they can all do a pretty rad spindash. When it comes to the characters and the controls, it's some solid stuff.

That said, the game isn't all sunshines and rainbows; far from it. For one thing, as much praise as I've given the characters, there's one little problem with them, and depending on the character, it can be damning; projectiles do not work half of the time. This isn't a problem if you're using someone like Sonic who doesn't bother with them, but if you're trying to toss out shurikens as Espio or throw dummy rings as Tails, there's no guarantee you'll actually do it. It's practically a death sentence for someone like Nack the Weasel, who depends on them more than anyone else. I've got absolutely no clue how this made it past the testers, but it's something the developers need to get fixed ASAP.

What they also need to fix is the level design. To start, it's far too easy to just do a homing attack and find yourself dropping off the edge of the stage into oblivion, but aside from that, there are just too many freaking glitches. For example, in Crisis City, you might find yourself darting right past the speed ramps at the beginning into a sea of fiery magma, and even if you manage to stop yourself in time and make sure you actually get on the ramp, you can still get stuck in the boost ring that said ramp sends you to, with nothing you can do to stop it aside from restarting the level. Things like this can be found all over the place; everything's going fine until, for whatever reason, your character isn't able to cover the distance of a scripted leap, or isn't able to break out of a boost loop, or they get stuck in a stage based off a SA 2 treasure hunting level thanks to having no flying or gliding abilities to get them out of the pit they're trapped in, since the game lets you choose anyone you want whenever you want regardless of whether it should. This can happen right in the middle of a level that's otherwise pretty fun, only for it to suddenly turn pear-shaped when a glitch rears its' ugly head. I get that this is a fangame, but you'd think they'd make sure you could actually complete the thing. As it, it's got a lot of neat ideas and is still fun to just mess around with in the Test Level, but as a fully fledged Sonic fangame, it really needs some polishing up. That said, it's also got Team Mode ala Sonic Heroes ,so I guess that's enough reason to give it a whirl.tongue

[up]If anything, Sonic World shows exactly what happens if characters like Tails and Knux get their full flight and gliding/climbing abilities in an actual 3D game.

That is to say, they completely break the game. No wonder Sonic Team had to resort to giving them their own levels and goals.

[up]On the bright side, stumbling onto Sonic World helped introduce me to the wider spectrum of Sonic fangames out there, and I ended up coming across this little beauty:

Sonic Nebulous has three things going for it. Or at the very least, it has three things that make it stand out. The first one you'll notice straight away, which is the art style. It's basically what you'd get if Sonic got a moody Grim and Gritty makeover, with some of the characters getting Darker and Edgier redesigns and the overall coloring being somewhat sepian-toned. And the Sonic CD-esque music only helps reinforce this. I don't mind it too much, and I don't think the game overdoes it, but I can see how it can be a problem for some people.

The second thing is the character roster. Like Sonic World, this game has a lot of characters to choose from, and most of them are still pretty different from one another. The difference here though is that the game is based off of the Archie comics, which coincidentally is the third thing it's got going for it, with Knothole even being the first freaking level. While you've still got plenty of characters from the games, you've also got everyone ranging from Sally, Rotor, Bunny and Antoine, to Uncle Chuck, to even Rosie the freaking Chipmunk. That said, those aren't the only reasons to play it, because in spite of it's Archie leanings, it plays a lot like a classic 2D sonic game, only with extra perks like homing attacks and the like. The level design is a lot better than Sonic World at any rate, if only because there aren't any glitches and you can actually beat the darn thing. It's actually pretty fun if you give it a chance. Whether you're a fan of the comics or just don't give a crap about them, it's still worth a shot.

This might be a fandom Berserk Button, but, I remember Freedom Planet getting brought up here once or twice, and then I saw the thread, but I ignored it, assuming it was just some kind of SATAM fangame.

Holy crap I was wrong. Sonic's gameplay meets Megaman's level design meets Ristar's character animation.

And now to go gush about it in the aforementioned thread. :3

I can understand some people getting a little peeved that it started off as a Sonic fangame, but other than that...

Probably because the game is arguably better than Sonic ever was despite being in the same genre and style.

[up]Same here. The comics may not be perfect, but on the whole, they at least manage to deliver an actual story and Character Development, and more often than not are pretty darn good for what they are. Whereas in most of the Sonic games, you're lucky if you get a Sonic Adventure. Which also kinda-sorta got two different comic adaptions anyway, (Archie and Fleetway,) so it's not even something you have to play the games to see. I love the games, but story ain't one of the things they've got going for them.

[up]Eh, I wouldn't mind, but if we're going to do a Sonic rhythm game, then we need to do it right. And that means opting to really Live and Learn.

YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH!
