I'm sorry I've neglected this thread, I've been away in Amsterdam. For my Patrick's Day, I got drunk, went to a club and got together with the girl I'm currently dating. Not much in the way of depravity, but then that's a slightly Americanized aspect of the day (apologies to American tropers).

Scots-Irish fella here. Figured I'd best make it known so we can all suffer together. Sadly don't live on the Emerald Isle, though I have hopped across and graced it with my presence from time to time. Anyhow, I'll raise a pint of stout in your general direction, ask "How's the craic?" and be off on my merry way.

[up] I salute you, fellow Gael. wink

Don't know if this is already widely known, but apparently in addition to everyone else in the world, the Westboro Baptist Church has a serious hate-boner for us.

[up] Nice to see sanity represented in the comments section at least.

I also love how there's an ad for watching RTE overseas right next to the hate-speech.

So, Dan, whereabouts in the country are you from? I'm from Cork, but am currently situated in Maynooth, for work placement.

Approximately 25% Irish here. This descendant of O'Brien is reporting in. My ancestors moved to Canada before the Great Famine. I don't quite remember a lot of the details, but Hilarity Ensues after they emigrate to the United States sometime after the American Civil War for about the next century involving their military service, crafty manipulation of the Homestead Act, a small moonshining operation during Prohibition, a joyride through Italy in a tank, and chilling out in Thailand while maintaining aircraft during much of Operation Barrel Roll and other covert operations during the Vietnam War.

Unfortunately, my near (chronologically) family's not all that up on following the family history beyond 3 or so levels, and most of those who were have since passed on due to assorted variations on the general theme of old age, so I don't know exactly how much Irish ancestry I have. I do, however, know that I do have some Irish blood in me, along with some Scandanavian and German (read: "northern European mutt" tongue ), which ultimately results in my being a pale skinned redhead that sunburns way too damn easily*

True. A pity, though, that the rumours are all lies; Irishmen are in no way inclined to epic sarcasm more than any other culture.

I'm actually related, albeit distantly, to one of the Presidents of Ireland, whose father was an author, Irish Nationalist, and was executed by the authority of the Irish Free State during the Irish Civil War.

I'm about 3/4s Irish(American), my dad being roughly 50-50 German-Irish (if you leave off extremely fractional things he's about 1/16th of) and my mom is 100% straight-up Irish genetically speaking though the family came over on the famine ships they found a 'nice' Irish neighborhood in New York and stayed there marrying Irish and 'importing' new Irish folk as needed. : P

Third or fourth generation here, though I still manage to be about 50% Irish. Not sure where my ancestors lived in Ireland, though.

Attention Children of the Diaspora!

I have made a thread about the Irish language, which is officially ranked the coolest language ever to exist.

It's in yack fest.

Check it out.

Glasgow Irishman here.

As much as we can work out, my family (on my fathers side) originated somewhere around Tyrone and Donegal before my great-grandfather and his family the jump over to Scotland during the Irish Civil War.

My grandfather's family originated in Ireland as well — his grandparents lived in Ireland but his mother went to London to work (where he was born) before the family wound up here in the early 1930s.

And let us pray that come it may (As come it will for a' that)

My father's side was Scottish (Glaswegian) and English (London), but my mother's side was definitely Irish. Although I am unable to trace them back any farther than two generations, to rural Indiana around the 1900s, they had the surname Casey, and my grandfather, grandmother, two uncles, aunt and cousins were/are undoubtedly all Irish in look.
