It seems that these are a tricky thing to deal with in writing. How do you handle them?

In what way are you going to use them?

I would advise making them short and sweet, in particular if they are in the middle of a battle or other important scene.

If you need that much exposition about a characters past, have them tell their story to the others around a campfire or something, so you have all the characters together and so the people aren’t going to be annoyed the you’re coving little Timmy’s tragic death as opposed to, say, the fight.

TL:DR: If you’re going to divulge a back-story though flashback, make sure the plot won’t be going anywhere for a while.
