What is this about?: Alternate DVD Commentary

This article seems to be "all commentaries of any sort distributed through any means."

I assume this trope is supposed to be "fan-made commentaries snarking and/or gushing over a work, inspired by MST 3 K." Then why are the following on this list?

  • Official DVD commentaries by people other than the director, including animated characters (using the "animated actors perform in cartoons" conceit), actors from the film acting in character, and experts in film theory and history.
  • Official DVD commentaries distributed via the web instead of being on the physical disc.

These should be on the regular DVD Commentary page, and the Alternate DVD Commentary page should have two sections-the projects made by former members of MST 3 K and the created-by-fans-for-fans-unofficially projects (most of whom are listed at Zarban).

You've pretty much got it pegged what I meant when I launched the page.

There does seem to be a problem here. I think the problem is that the name is misleading. The term "Alternate DVD Commentary" appears to mean a commentary on the DVD that is different than the 'typical' commentary, which would make sense since many DV Ds have multiple commentaries these days, the 'actual' commentary with the directors and actors, and the 'fun' commentary with the characters in the film. The description seems to describe a commentary that is an alternative to the DVD commentary, and by definition would not be included on the DVD at all. I think the confusion really sets in because some of the in character commentaries included on the DVD tend to follow the MST 3 K format, which has become a part of the definition thanks to the description.

What we have here are two tropes, so we might need to split them, and perhaps come up with more indicative names. How about In-Character Commentary and Snarky Commentary?

All instances of commentaries that are on the physical discs (and those made by the creators and distributed through alternate means) belong on the main DVD Commentary page.

Alternate DVD Commentary should be confined to the "by fans, for fans" unofficial projects with a mention of MST 3 K and links to Rifftrax, The Film Crew, and Cinematic Titanic.

How about Fan Commentary, then? It's a lot more indicative in my opinion.

Okay, 39 wicks. Here we go...

BFFF=An acronym for By Fans, For Fans

A lot of these are potholing Rifftrax entries, which should be linked to a proper Rifftrax page instead.

punctuated titles

  • 300-Rifftrax.
  • It's Popular, Now it Sucks-official DVD commentary that's not the directors or cast.
  • Let's Play-a comparison to MST 3 K's method. Should really be a link to MST 3 K's page instead.

unpunctuated titles

  • Fan Fic Recs/Aladdin-A legitimate BFFF
  • Batman And Robin-Rifftrax
  • Batman Forever-Rifftrax
  • Clash Of The Titans-Rifftrax
  • Compensating For Something-Rifftrax
  • Troper Tales/Complaining About Complaining-Rifftrax
  • D-War-Rifftrax
  • Dueling Shows-Rifftrax
  • DVD Commentary-a reference to BFFF, but should mention the other methods as well
  • Troper Tales/Fan Hater-a reference to the concept itself, this is okay
  • Large Ham/Film-Rifftrax
  • Follow The Leader-a reference to how Rifftrax inspired these, this is okay
  • Harry Potter-a variant of the traditional BFFF
  • Film/Harry Potter-Rifftrax, plus a mention of a proper BFFF commentary (which really needs a link)

Here are the rest of the wicks. A little help checking these out? But in summary, we seem to need to A. Make a Rifftrax index and just add a list of the movies that have been riffed to it, B. Keep Alternate DVD Commentary restricted to mean "official commentaries either on the disc or distributed online by the cast and crew, including those performed 'in-character'", and C. Create a Fan Commentary page for free (not the guest riffs at Rifftrax) commentaries created strictly by fans, for fans.

Other wicks and what they're about:

  • YMMV/House Of The Dead — Pothole from "riff", maybe meaning Rifftrax.
  • I Know You Know I Know — Wizard People, Dear Reader, a BFFF.
  • Incognito Cinema Warriors XP — MST 3 K clone.
  • Inheritance Cycle — Rifftrax
  • John Waters — Mentions he's done one on Christmas Evil.
  • Jurassic Park — Rifftrax
  • Fan Nickname/Literature — Wizard People, Dear Reader.
  • MST — Sister trope, for Fan Fic riffing.
  • Mystery Science Theater 3000 — The originator.
  • New Media Tropes — Which it is.
  • Pod Cast — Which most of them are.
  • Reefer Madness — Rifftrax
  • Riff Trax — Rifftrax, of course.
  • Road House — Rifftrax
  • Snark Bait — Mentions most of them follow MST 3 K's lead of Snark Baiting.
  • The Day After Tomorrow — Rifftrax
  • The Incredibles — Legit example.
  • The Matrix — Rifftrax, with a tip to DVD Podblast (which I just created a page for). Plus, the "played with" example I think is a legit example.
  • Traitor Shot — DVD Podblast. I've already redirected.
  • Vomiting Cop — Legit example of a commentary on an extra on the Hot Fuzz DVD.
  • Film/X-Men — Rifftrax

Yup, the first step seems to be untangling the Rifftrax examples. Once we set up an index that lists all works that have been riffed, we can see what's left.
