I'm pretty certain a game that is a prequel to another game in the series doesn't tend to count as a Spiritual Successor.

'twas brillig.

It doesn't have Contra in the title, so it muddies the water a bit. That doesn't answer the question, by the way.

I downloaded it last night and played a little before going to bed. I had only played one level of Hard Corps waaaaaay back when, so I'll probably try to play that one again after I'm done with this.

So far, I don't know if the characters have different attributes like the characters in the Genesis game (such as having different versions of weapons; though I do know that Sayuri is the only character that doesn't use a gun and thus can't get different weapons, making her a lot like Zero) and I'm not sure how I feel about having two of the characters be DLC right off the bat despite both of them being present in the opening (which would make one think that they were unlockable characters).

Speaking of the opening, the animations are very nice (unsurprising as Arc System Works is involved in this), as is the music (makes me wonder: were they intentionally trying to invoke a Guilty Gear vibe with the music?). Voices are... well, they seem to be fine except for Krystal's voice. I can't put my finger on it, but something just sounds off.

I do feel a bit weird playing a Contra game with an actual storyline (partially due to not playing through Hard Corps and partially because the last game in the series that I played was Contra Rebirth on the Wii). It's also pretty difficult (for me at least; some of the bullets are hard to see and the auto-fire doesn't fire quick enough), but I don't think it's cheap (yet).

EDIT: Unrelated, but somehow all the topics in the Video Game forum got marked "read" for me. Annoying, as I was saving some threads until they accumulated more posts...

Its a prequel to Contra Hardcops

The protagonist is Bahamut, future antagonist of Hardcops

The Wikia says that at least

I played the demo last night, I'm not quite sure what this is but it definitely ain't Contra. That said, it isn't bad, but...weird. The art direction looks plain odd, having fully drawn sprites on a 3D Plane (think Klonoa, but worse). The gameplay feels meh compared to other recent titles such as 4 and Rebirth.

Based solely on the demo, I'd give it a 7.5/10. I certainly hope it picks up after the first level.

So I blew through this recently. Was pretty good, but the ferris wheel boss can go straight to hell.
