Fighting back was the only thing that stopped the bullying for me, at least for a while. I decked more than one kid in high school, which usually gave me a few days/weeks reprieve from the worst of it. (the worst being two or more kids kicking and punching me in a corner/on the floor) I never fought back for revenge, I just wanted it to stop. Ignoring them never worked. Going to the teacher was counterproductive, because the teachers did nothing and the bullying becomes worse because you're a wimp/girl for "telling."
Luckily for me, my family moved to the other side of Melbourne when I was about 17 and I changed to a new school, which had good teachers who kept bullying to a minimum and didn't do victim blaming - at my old school, I don't remember single time where I wasn't suspended/given detention/given a stern warning for defending myself. A lot of the teachers were basically bullies themselves.
Okay. To laconicize and....more calmly rephrase my previous post.
I am constantly picked on, have tried everything I can think of to stop it, and don't really consider it my fault in any way. Keep in mind I have a tendency to blame myself for everything and its grandfather.
I spread my wings and I learn how to fly....They're not the same thing, but that trait happens to be the very trait that makes bullying so despicable in the first place.

Sort of lost overview here :(
As stated earlier, there's a difference between self defense and revenge.
Or take your self defense too far out of perverse pleasure.

: Indeed. But for it to be revenge you will first have to get to a position where they leave you alone.
Edit: Sure, but on the other hand, what if breaking bones actually get a bunch of ragtags to stop, while just raging back made it worse?

A guy called dvorak is tired. Tired of humanity not wanting to change to improve itself. Quite the sad tale.People won't bully you if their arm is broken in several places. Power, after all, in this sense, stems from fear - and if they shit themselves whenever you walk in a room, they're unlikely to try any shit with you.
Disproportionate Retribution much? If they didn't inflict grievous bodily harm on you, it seems rather extreme to do so in retaliation.

There is no "bullies want ____. Some people will hit you because you're stupid. Some people will hit you because you're mean. Some people will hit you because they like it and its fun.

A guy called dvorak is tired. Tired of humanity not wanting to change to improve itself. Quite the sad tale.Depends what the desired result is. If we're talking self-defence, virtually anything goes, IMO. Calculated revenge? Not so much.

I remember grade school.
I actually considered making napalm and throwing it inside the classroom.
^Maybe you should get counseling.
Meh, the napalm I was going to use was crude and was likely to kill me while I was still making it.
Boiling bar of soap in gasoline, anyone?
Not effective.

Meh, at least revenge is about having reason to believe your target deserves it. (And I mean from a moral perspective, not a "survival of the fittest" perspective.)
It's not something that should be relied on, but it's I'm not sure one should blame people for resorting to it when the schools themselves don't have much of a sense of justice. -.-
