ITT: We are all Pokémon Trainers

Voiceover Me: It was 2009, it was during a month that I had negotiated to be downtime from the rest of the year. Me, Oakley, Booster and the Lopunny that would become known as Susan were wandering through a cave in the mountains when we came across a strange building.

Me: -Lifting rocks out of the way- Looks like there used to be someone living down here.

Oakley: -To Susan- <Or conducting sacrifices...>

Me: -Wanders into the room, a few coins are scattered near the entrance- Looks like someone raided this place before us.

Oakley: <Well, Pent ain't no Lara Croft>

Susan: -Giggles-

Me: -Looks at them- I sometimes wonder what you guys think is so funny.

Voiceover Me: Turns out there was not much treasure left in the place. The only thing small enough to carry out was a strange gold bracelet.

Me: -Turning the bracelet over a few times- Strange carvings, looks like it might be worth something to a museum or a private collector or anyone who can read this text. -Attempts to put on, some strange force keeps it from going on- Even stranger... A bracelet that can't be used. Anyway, let's set up camp for tonight.

ANYBODY WANT TO CATCH ME OR SOMETHING? IM SO BORED.

Voiceover Me: Sorry, I'm in a helicopter and narrating a flashback. I'm not going to Retcon you into my team.

Hello?

-I open the door to Professor Elm's Lab and poke my head in.-

...Professor?

Professor Elm: -Looks up from what he's doing.- Oh Luke! Nice to see you, do come in.

-I enter the lab, walking over to the Professor.-

So, er...My Mom told me you wanted me to help with something?

Professor Elm: Why yes, exactly! You see, a college of mine named Mister Pokémon…

Mister Pokémon, seriously?

Professor Elm:…Has apparently made an important discovery of some kind, Although, knowing him, it’s probably another Pokémon egg. Anyway, I’m very busy working with the other Professors on The Expanded Pokédex Project, and don’t have time to go over and check it myself. So, do you think you could go for me?

Well that sounds simple enough. How far away is he?

Professor Elm: He lives on Route 30, just north of Cherrygrove City.

Okay, that’s perfectly fine. Although, all the wild Pokémon between here and there might cause a few problems…

Professor Elm: Well, I have a little something I want to give you that can help you with that. Come with me a second…

-The Professor leads me over to strage looking machine with three Pokéballs inside.-

Professor Elm: Your mother keeps telling me how you’ve been thinking of becoming a Pokémon trainer. So I thought as thanks for doing this little favour for me, I’d let you choose a starter Pokémon of your own for you to keep!

-I'm shocked.-

…A Pokémon? Of my own? Really?

Professor Elm: I knew you would be pleased. You always did like Pokémon. I remember your father telling me about how when you were younger about how you kept going on and on about all the things you knew about Pokémon.

-I blush, slightly embarrassed.-

Err…Yeah…

Professor Elm: But that’s enough remising. Go on, Choose a Pokémon!

-Still a bit shocked at the thought of owning my own Pokémon, I step up to the machine and take a closer look. A screen on top of the device is showing data on the Pokémon in the first Pokéball.-

Professor Elm: Do you want Chikorita?

Hang on, I haven’t looked at the other Pokémon yet…

-I push a button to rotate the tray the Pokéballs are sitting on, bringing the next Pokéball to the front and changing the data the screen displays.-

Professor Elm: Cyndaquill’s always a popular choice. Do you want him?

…Nah, not really.

-I push the button again, rotating the tray to the third and last Pokémon.-

…Ooh…

Professor Elm: Oh, Totodile! They’re a solid choice, very dependable. Do you want him?

-I think it over for a second, then smile.-

…Yeah, I want him.

- Several years ago in Twinleaf town, a younger DS is getting ready to leave for her journey -

DS' mother: Are you ready, dear? Your friend is waiting outside.

... Can't you come with me?

DS' mother: Oh, DS...

I mean it, mother. I don't want to be all alone out there, people can be so cold and selfish.

DS' mother: Okay, so you've had some bad experiences with your friends at school, but not all people are like that.

... I know, but what if I don't make any new friends? What if my Pokémon won't like me?

DS' mother: Listen, this is hard for the both of us. For me it's hard to send my only daughter out into the world like this, but I feel you will be happier this way. It'll be a chance for you to meet new people.

As if anyone would want to hang out with me...

DS' mother: Don't say that, you do have some friends you know. Like that friend of yours waiting for you outside?

DS' friend: DS! What is taking you so long? Let's go already!

Yeah, him... But we'll be going separate ways, doing different things.

DS' mother: But you're not alone, dear. I'll be cheering you on from here.

So, do you think I can become a good trainer?

DS' mother: Of course! I've seen you read so much about the different Pokémon that can be found in different parts of the world, and I remember how excited you were on those vactions we took to other regions when you were younger. I believe you have what it takes to become a great trainer, maybe you could even become the Sinnoh champion!

... Well, okay then! I'm ready to do this!

- I begin to walk towards the door, before turning back -

Oh, I forgot something!

DS' mother: What is it?

- I give my mother a hug -

Thank you, mother.

DS' mother: You're welcome, dear.

- I head back towards the door -

DS' mother: Come back and visit sometime!

I will!

DS' friend: (as I walk outside) Finally! What took you so long? Come on, let's go!

- My friend grabs onto my hand and starts dragging me off in the direction off Route 201 -

Ow... Don't do that! It hurts! (friend doesn't listen) Seriously, I don't need your help to know where to go, let go off my hand!

-I gingerly hold Totodile’s Pokéball in my hand. I still haven’t fully taken in everything that’s happened yet.-

Professor Elm: Well, why don’t you let him out and say hello?

…Huh? Oh yeah, good idea.

-I get ready to throw the ball.-

…I don’t have to shout something when I throw the ball, do I?

Professor Elm: Nah, you don’t have too if you don‘t want too.

Okay, understood.

-I take a deep breath, then throw the ball. It hit’s the floor, bounces then opens in a flash of light, releasing a small, blue, Reptilian Pokémon.

Totodile: -Looks around.- …Toto?

-I stare at Totodile in awe.-

…Wow…He’s…He’s awesome…

Totodile: -Looks at me- Toto!

Hey there little guy…

-I bend down to Totodile’s level.-

I’m Luke, and…I guess I’m your Pokemon trainer now. Is that okay with you?

Totodile: -Nods- Dile!

Aww, you’re a cute little guy, aren’t you?

-I go to pet Totodile on the head.-

CHOMP!

…

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! LET GO! LET GO!

-Totodile realizes that I don’t like being bitten and quickly let’s go.-

Professor Elm: Oh dear, are you alright?

-I check my hand.-

…Yeah, it’s fine…I’m not bleeding or anything…But he bit me! Why did he bite me?

Professor Elm: It’s okay! Totodile often bite the things they like!

…Ow…Wait…He likes me?

Professor Elm: He seems pretty happy to be with you to me.

-I glance at Totodile, who looks apologetic.-

…You didn’t mean to hurt me, did you?

-Totodile shakes his head vigorously.-

…Alright, apology accepted. Just don’t do it again, okay?

Totodile: -Smiles, and nods.- Totodile!

Professor Elm: I’m surprised! You’ve only just met and you’re already getting along really well! Incidentally, why don’t you give Totodile a nickname?

A nickname? …That sounds good. I don’t really want to just call him Totodile. Now let’s see…

-Thinks.-

Now let’s see. Totodile are Water type Pokemon, What do I think of when I think of water? Um…Seas, rivers, lakes…Lakes? Lake? Lake!

I’ve got it! How do you like the name Lake?

Totodile: -Thinks for a few seconds, then nods vigorously.- Dile!

Okay, so you’re Lake then! Lake the Totodile! Awesome, eh?

Lake: -Grins- Totodile!

Professor Elm: Wow, you two go together really well! I have a feeling that you’re both going to be really good friends with each other.

Really, you think?

Professor Elm: Seems that way to me!

…Cool. Anyway, I’d best get going on that errand then.

-I begin to head out.-

Come on Lake, I’ll show you my home before we go.

Lake: Toto! -Eagerly follows.-

See you later Professor. Thanks for the Pokémon!

Professor Elm: Oh, no problem. Take care, both of you!

Oh, we will!

-Me and Lake leave. Professor Elm waits until we’re gone, then pulls out his Pokégear and dials a number.-

-Pokégear rings-

???: Hello? Professor Elm?

Professor Elm: Yes, it’s me. I’ve given Luke a Totodile.

???: Excellent. How did they get on?

Professor Elm: He bonded with him almost instantly. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone get on with a Pokémon so well upon first receiving them. Call it a hunch, but I think you just maybe right about him…

???: It certainly seems that way. He may just be the trainer we are looking for to bring him back…

Professor Elm: I’ll contact you again after he returns form his errand.

???: Understood.

-The person on the other end hangs up. Professor Elm puts his Pokégear away.-

Professor Elm: Hmm…I wonder…

- Younger DS is still being dragged along to Route 201 -

You know, I don't think it's a good idea to go in there. There are wild Pokémon there, you know!

DS' friend: But Professor Rowan lives in Sandgem town, so if we want our Pokémon, we must go through there!

Can you please let go off my hand now? Or at the very least loosen your grip?

- Professor Rowan and his young assistant appear -

Professor Rowan: Stop it, you two!

DS' friend: Gah!

- My friend steps back in surprise, letting go off my hand -

Professor Rowan: You shouldn't walk right into areas where wild Pokémon can be found if you don't have a Pokémon of your own! That is very dangerous!

I tried to tell him, sir.

DS' friend: You're Professor Rowan, right? Well, we were on our way to Sandgem town because we want to become Pokémon trainers!

Professor Rowan: (examining us) Hmm... Very well, I think you both look like you've got potential.

DS' friend: Really? So do we get a Pokémon?

Professor Rowan: Sure.

- Professor Rowan's assistant hands him a suitcase containing three pokeballs -

Professor Rowan: Inside these pokeballs is the official starter Pokémon that trainers in this region can begin their journey with.

DS' friend: Aw, sweet! Let me see them!

Professor Rowan: Hey!

DS' friend: Ah! (steps back in surprise)

Professor Rowan: Where are your manners, young man? Haven't you ever heard of ladies first? Let your female friend choose first.

Me?

DS' friend: ... Fine, you get first pick.

Professor Rowan: Now, don't be shy, young lady. And remember, your starter Pokémon is important, so take your time and choose wisely.

- I step forward to take a look at each of the three Pokémon -

-an twelve-year-old Crewe is standing outside Elm's door, looking nervous about trying another journey with completely new Pokemon. She gingerly opens the door to find the Professor hovering over his computer-

Er, Professor? Professor Elm? Someone told me you still had some Pokemon you were giving away...

-he looks up and turns around-

Elm: Oh, a new trainer! Are you ready to begin your Pokemon journey?

Yeah. I've actually done this before, so if you could just, like, give me a Pokemon I'll be on my way.

Elm: Of course! A Pokemon! Come, there are many here!

-he bustles over to the machine and I follow-

Elm: There are three types, here, Grass, Fire and—

Yeah, Water. I chose the Water type starter in Sinnoh. I think this time I'd like...

-picks up the Cyndaquil's Pokeball and tosses it, releasing her-

Hi, there. How'd you look to come on a journey with me? I'll call you Ashes.

Ashes: -looks around, blinking in the light- ... Quil? -notices me and Elm- Quil!

Elm: She certainly seems excited to go with you! Now, if you've picked up a starter Pokemon from another Professor before, I don't suppose they gave you—

A Pokedex? Yeah, I've done one of those before. Do you want me to do one for you?

Elm: It would be very helpful if you did! Now, here are five Pokeballs, a couple of Potions, and a Pokedex! Have fun!

Thanks! Come on, Ashes!

-we walk out of the lab, feeling pretty excited-

Later, on Route 21, I have just caught my first Pokemon in Johto!

-scratching the Sentret's head-

We're gonna be good friends, Hermes, I know it...

- The younger DS is staring at the three pokeballs in the suitcase, trying to make her decision -

DS' friend: Hurry up, will you?

Professor Rowan: Don't be so impatient, young man! Give the girl time to choose.

Professor Rowan's young assistant: Maybe you'd like to let the Pokémon out of their balls and get a better look at them that way?

- I nod my head, and press the button on the first pokeball. A Turtwig is released from it -

Professor Rowan's young assistant: That is Turtwig, the grass starter. He's somewhat bashful.

- The Turtwig and I stare blankly at eachother for a moment, before I shake my head and press the button on the next pokeball. A Piplup comes out -

Professor Rowan's young assistant: This is Piplup, the water starter. Cute, isn't it?

Yeah, it is cute...

Professor Rowan's young assistant: Piplup are quite popular with young girls. Although this particular Piplup seems to be somewhat hasty and impatient.

Sounds like someone I know...

DS' friend: ... What?

- I take the last pokeball and the press the button on it to send out the last of the three Pokémon, a Chimchar appears -

Professor Rowan's young assistant: This is Chimchar, the fire starter. She's quite bold, and will happily fight for it's allies.

- The Chimchar walks over to me, and smiles at me -

Professor Rowan's young assistant: Hey, I think she likes you!

... Hi there.

- I pick up the Chimchar, the Chimchar then hugs me -

... I'll take this one.

Professor Rowan: Good choice, young lady. (turning to my friend) Now, I believe it's your turn to...

DS' friend: I'll take the Piplup!

- The Piplup sticks out his tongue at Turtwig, who looks somewhat disappointed about not being chosen -

Professor Rowan's young assistant: (petting the Turtwig on the head) Aww, don't be sad, Turtwig! I can be your trainer, if it's okay with Professor Rowan.

Professor Rowan: Sure, go ahead.

- Professor Rowan's assistant happily picks up the Turtwig, who seems happy to have him as his trainer -

DS' friend: Okay, now that we both have our Pokémon, how about a battle?

Now?

DS' friend: Yeah! My Piplup VS your Chimchar! What do you say?

- I look at my Chimchar, she nods her head to show that she is ready for a battle -

... Okay! Let's do it!

- We have a Pokémon battle -

[[Center:~Tin Tower, One year, four Months ago.~]]

-I emerge from a doorway to the roof of the Tower, Puffing and panting.-

What happened in ancient times to make it so they had to fill this Tower with jumping puzzles?

-Lake emerges behind me, also worn out.-

Lake: Feraliagtr…

-We take a few minutes to catch our breath, taking in the wonderful view from the roof of the tower.-

Wow…

??? It’s wonderful, isn’t it?

-Zuki, one of the Kimono Girls, approaches us.-

It really is, isn’t it? You think so too, don’t you Lake?

Lake: -Nods.-

Zuki: Are you ready to begin?

…As ready as we’ll ever be.

Zuki: Very well. Come.

-Zuki leads us to the centre of the roof.-

So, if everything goes according to plan, Ho-oh will come back?

Zuki: The legends say that Ho-oh will return when a trainer who is pure of heart ascends the Tin Tower.

-The other Kimono Girls are gathered around the roof of the tower.-

Naoko: You have proven time and again that you are a trainer worthy of Ho-oh. The undying love for your Pokémon…

Miki: Your bravery in the face of danger…

Sayo: Your caring nature towards People and Pokémon alike…

Kuni: These are all the traits of a trainer with a Heart of Gold.

Zuki: We have little doubt that you are the trainer who will bring Ho-oh back.

-I’m shocked. I take a few seconds to take this in.-

…Wow…I didn’t think that unimportant, little old me would be the one to bring a legendary back…

Zuki -Smiles.- Well sometimes, the things you are looking for are never really where you would expect to find them. Anyway, are you ready to begin?

-I look at glance at Lake, who gives me an approving nod in return.-

…Yes, we’re ready.

Zuki: Then it shall be done.

-And with that, the girls begin the summoning ritual. Me and Lake watch amazed as they preform a wonderful dance in time to the ringing of the bells tied to the tower. After a captivating performance that seems to last for hours, the girls dance ends.

In silence, we all scan the sky for any signs of the legendary bird Pokémon.-

…Wait…Do you hear that?

-The sound is unmistakably that of wings. They’re sound far away, but are gradually getting closer.-

Kuni: -Points- THERE!

Where? -Me and Lake both look.- …OH!

-None of us have any doubts about the identity of the magnificent Rainbow Bird approaching the tower. We all watch in awe as the legendary Pokémon ascends in a spiral, eventually slowing to a hover just above the center of the roof.-

…It’s…It’s him…

Lake: -In awe.- Gatr….

We all stare gaze upon the bird in silent reverence in a while, all too shocked to say anything. Until the silence is eventually broken…

Ho-oh: So you’ve come.

…?!

Ho-oh: I’ve been waiting for this day for a long time. Never have I sensed a trainer with a Heart of Gold as pure as yours. You truly are exceptional Luke.

…Thank you…

Ho-oh: But…There is one more test you must pass before I consider you worthy.

…What must I do?

Ho-oh: -Smirks.-

-All of a sudden, Ho-oh spreads his wings, his body erupting in rainbow fire.-

Ho-oh: Pokemon Trainer Luke! I CHALLENGE YOU!!!

- The Sinnoh region, the day after DS received her first Pokémon. After beating her rival in her first Pokémon battle, and spending the rest of the day getting to know her new Chimchar better. DS is finally headed out to start her journey for real -

DS' friend/rival: Ah, DS! You and HotStuff ready to go?

Yeah, we're ready!

- My Chimchar, who I gave the nickname HotStuff is sitting on my shoulder, smiling at me -

DS' friend/rival: Hey, are those new shoes?

Yeah, my mother gave them to me.

DS' friend/rival: Cool, with those running shoes you might have a chance of keeping up with me! But enough about that, let's go to Lake Verity!

Lake Verity? Why?

DS' friend/rival: I hear there is a legendary Pokémon living there! We should totally check that out! Come on!

- My friend/rival starts shoving me from behind -

What's with you? I've told you that I'm perfectly capable of walking on my own!

DS' friend/rival: Sorry.

- We both head off to Lake Verity -

Me: -Sees his bullies walking on the other side street- Crap, I don't feel like dealing with them today. They said I couldn't bring my Pokemon with me anyway.

Tagg's Sister: Hi! My brother's hiding behind that mailbox.

-The main two bullies laugh and get closer-

- Lake Verity, on the day DS began her journey -

Lake Verity... I've always liked this place. I sometimes come here when I'm feeling sad or if there is something I'm nervous about. Somehow being here always makes me feel better.

DS' rival: Yeah, whatever. Where's that legendary Pokémon?

- I look over at the cave on an island in the center of the lake -

Maybe it's in that cave over there?

DS' rival: ... How are we supposed to get over there?

I don't know. I think we might be able to get there if we had a Pokémon that could use surf.

DS' rival: ... Well, guess we'll have to come back here later then. Besides, we'd probably not be strong enough at this point to catch a legendary Pokémon anyways.

Yeah, you're right about that.

- We suddenly hear a strange sound, it appears to be the cry of a Pokémon. When I look in direction of where the voice came from, I briefly see Mesprit's spirit on the surface of the lake, although I did not know what it was at the time. All I knew at the time, was that all my remaining doubts about becoming a trainer at that point were gone, and I suddenly felt a lot better about myself than I had in a long time -

HEY MA! Johnson's mad again and he's ruining my Sunday Skirt! I could use a bit of help here!

Gabriela: Why don't you come in, sweetie? There's a nice man here to meet you.

Would by any chance be a dark skinned boy by the name of Omar? Because we've already met and no I don't want a boyfriend yet and no it's not because he's black!

Gabriela: No, it ain't Omar! It's a Pokemon Professor!

-Jane ducks her head in through the window with a very angry Combusken pecking at her forehead- A pokemon professor!?

Gabriela: Tell Johnson to git and come in here!

You got it! -spars with the Combusken for a few minutes before defeating it and shoving it back with its parents. Once she finishes with that, she runs all the way back to the living room of the house and meets Professor Birch-

- Sinnoh, Route 203, a few days after DS started her journey. DS has just left Jubilife city to begin heading towards Oreburgh city to challenge the gym leader there and get her first badge. With her are her Pokémon, Hot Stuff and her newly caught Budew, named Briar Rose. It is getting dark as DS walks into Route 203, she stops to check what time it is on the Poketch she obtained back in Jubilife city -

Okay, while we're here, I'd like to catch a Zubat. I hear they come out at night in this area.

- My two Pokémon look at me curiously -

Finding one shouldn't be too hard, I hear they are common as dirt!

- I look over at Briar Rose -

Of course, if I catch one, I'll have two poison types on my team...

- I look over at Hot Stuff -

And when you evolve, you'll be part fighting type, which means I'd have three Pokémon that are weak to psychic types.

- I shake my head -

Oh, it doesn't matter. I'll just try to balance things out with the next three Pokémon I catch!

- I check my Poketch once more -

I love this thing! Jubilife city was pretty nice, although I wonder what was up with those Team Galactic guys we fought off there.

- I shrug, before noticing a Zubat chasing after a Bidoof in order to drink its blood a short distance away -

Oh, there's a Zubat! Let's catch it!

- We run over to catch the Zubat -

Somewhere in Sinnoh, outside of the route system

-A large group of Cherrim are releasing pollen into the air-

Hmm, interesting.

-After they leave, I get out of my blind-

So Cherrim mate by releasing copious amounts of pollen into the air. They also change form based on sunlight exposure. This'll be great for that compendium on form differences that they're doing later this year.

- Valley Windworks, a week after DS obtained her first badge at Oreburgh city, DS' Pokémon have gotten stronger, Hot Stuff has evolved into Monferno and she has captured a Pachirisu. DS has just taken care of Team Galactic at Floaroma town and Vallery Windworks -

Today was really hectic, right? I wonder what those Team Galactic guys are up to?

Team Galactic grunt: (appearing out of no where) Hey, girl! Team Galactic does not appreciate some girl messing with their plans!

What are your plans, anyway?

Team Galactic grunt: I just wanted to let you know that Mars has mentioned you to the other admins, and from now on, you're Team Galactic's enemy!

- The Team Galactic grunt runs off, leaving me and my four Pokémon behind -

Prof. Birch: -nods- I've heard some great stories about you from the locals. I was visiting here to get some fresh fruit for my family, and I saw all of these nice sketches of native pokemon all over the shops. As soon as I learned who it was I wanted to give them the chance to go out into the world and see their interpretation of all the pokemon he could see!

And were you surprised to realize that I'm a girl? -giggles-

Birch: Well... The surprise was kind of ruined by your feminine name.

Yeah, I guess so.

Birch: Now, see here. I brought with me three pokeballs here in this briefcase. Inside this briefcase are three pokeballs, each one holding one specimen of the Hoenn Starter Pokemon.

Really?

Birch: -nods- Now, -lifts up a Pokeball- This pokeball holds the Grass Type Pokemon Treecko. This one is male. -sets the ball down-

(petting my new Eevee on the head) You are so cute! I'm going to call you Velvet, because Espeon are said to have fur that has both the look and feel of velvet.

- Velvet happily hugs me, Hot Stuff looks rather jealous -

Aww... She likes me already! She's going to evolve into Espeon in no time!

Velvet: (sticks out her tongue at Hot Stuff)

Hot Stuff: (some steam comes out of her nostrils as she gives an annoyed grunt)

- Lake Verity, after DS, her rival and Professor Rowan's assistant failed to save the Sinnoh Lake Trio from Team Galactic. DS has seven badges, and is sitting by Lake Verity, rather depressed about Team Galactic getting away with kidnapping the Sinnoh Lake Trio. Her team are gathered around her, including her newest team member, Silvermist who DS caught as a Finneon on Route 205. By this point, all of the Pokémon on DS' team are fully evolved, except for Briar Rose as DS has not yet found a light stone -

Normally coming here makes me feel better, but I guess it's not really working this time since Mesprit is not here anymore... (sigh) I can't believe we were all too late to save Uxie, Azelf and Mesprit from Team Galactic. Even my rival is feeling depressed about it.

- I look at my Pokémon -

... May I ask you all something? We are truly friends, right? You don't just stick around because I'm your trainer and you have to?

Okay, team! We're going on a rescue mission! Team Galactic's headquarters is in Veilstone city, so that's probably where they are holding Uxie, Mesprit and Azelf!
