Help coming up with an ability/weapon/tool for my characters:

90s Pixel Mash-up

I am currently trying to write a series about monster hunting teenagers set in a world rife with schizo tech, magitek and anachronisms. There are three main characters; one is essentially a ninja, the other two are a couple - the girl is the adventurous type whilst her boyfriend is much more timid.

I have been struggling for a while to come up with abilities/tools for the two. For the girl, Aria, I am looking for something that makes her powerful but not necessarily super strength, more something that comes from within herself that means that she doesn't have to rely on others.

For the guy, Theo, I am looking for something less direct. He's never been the violent type and isn't really proficient with any weapons or anything like that. He's more of a strategist but at the same time he needs something to defend himself with.

I have come up with a few ideas: For Theo: Stasis gun (essentially freezes people in time but requires expensive ammunition) Reality altering gauntlets (limited in range and need equivalent matter to create) Bubble gun (fires explosive bubbles, poor range but good for strategic placement) Probability manipulation (create a strategy and then make it more or less likely to work out with the flip of a coin)

Hmmm. Well, how about this?

  • I take it Aria's supposed to be the direct/physical attacker of the two, so I'm thinking that a Power Fist of some sort might fit. They could give her a slight edge in her attacks, and she can empty her own energy into it for stronger attacks (if you've ever seen Big O, it could work something like this.)

  • As for Theo, how do you feel about him using some sort of bond creature? It could attack and defend on his behalf, since he's not much in the way of combat. On top of that, he could command it using a calculator or notes or something, even going so far as to add some sort of probability program in the mix. Barring that, he could just throw dice. That'd be cool.

Both of those sound pretty cool and are leaning towards ideas that I already had which is nice.

For Aria I like the idea of the gloves being a little more complicated than just punching things and I think the idea of pouring her energy into them helps with that. I might tweak the idea slightly and have the gloves produce a push or pull effect depending on which hand she uses (Left - Push, Right - Pull) and have the power determined by how much energy she pours in.

I've been watching a lot of Buso Renkin recently so the idea of a kind of Bond Creature is what I had in mind (I know they're not exactly the same in BR but still). I also had in mind that he'd be a character quite similar to a standard RPG protagonist in that he'd collect a fair few tools to aid him over the course of the story (helped by the fact that he's kind of a shopaholic in that regard).

Out of curiosity, what sorts of powers do the heroes' enemies have? It might be interesting/enlightening to compare their skill sets to the heroes and toy around with them. Theo could go up against an enemy who relies heavily on brute force, for example, and totally screws up his calculations. Or, they could use the same skill sets, and test each other in a Mirror Match.
