I'm starting to wonder if I even necessarily need a sixth pokemon. I think I have all my bases covered in terms of element matchups. Except Poison, but we've never had a problem with that so far.

Current Team:
Craig, lv51 Blastoise, relaxed
Trina, lv50 Primeape, quiet
Timothy, lv49 Vileplume, quirky
Felicity, lv50 Fearow, jolly
Stan, lv51 Jolteon, naive

Flew back to Pallet Town after reaching (but not entering) Seafoam Islands. Hi mom! After healing up, I traveled south, and found a patch of tall grass behind the fence that surrounded the town. Caught a Tangela, but Timothy already covered the Grass type, so even though I had the biggest urge to retire my Vileplume, in the end, I left the Tangela in the PC. Maybe next time.

Speaking of Timothy, he and Stan really bonded as they battled trainers with all their Water pokemon (and the occasional low-level Tentacool). Though Tim seems to be rubbing off a little too much on Stan, I think. The Jolteon's started using electric puns in battle.

The gym at Cinnabar Island was locked, so we had nothing else to do but wander around a creepy burned-down mansion with surprisingly catchy background music. This time, it was Trina and Felicity doing most of the fighting, with Craig backing them up on rare occasions.

You wouldn't usually expect wild pokemon to give you much trouble, but those Koffings... The way they love to just randomly blow up is just aggravating. Nobody's died to it yet, but they always put me on edge.

Picked up the TM for Solarbeam. Was supposed to teach it to Timothy along with Sunny Day, but I'm feeling apprehensive. We've never had a big need for him to do Poison damage with Acid, but Absorb has been useful despite the mere 20 power. The simultaneous attack and heal is nothing to sneeze at. On the other hand, Petal Dance has 70 power, which makes it a better offensive alternate to Solarbeam for times when we don't prep with Sunny Day for whatever reason.

But that decision can wait until later, because we found the key to the gym inside that mansion. (What it was doing there, I haven't the foggiest idea.) Craig took center stage here, and as if the type matchup wasn't advantage enough, Rain Dance pretty much erased any possibility of losing. Not even a direct hit with Fire Blast could do any significant damage. He's a tank, he's a Water type, and it's raining.

Blaine gave me the TM for Fire Blast for winning. "Don't waste it on Water pokemon", he said. I guess he learned that the hard way.

Bill showed up just as I was leaving, and draggedinvited me to One Island. Turns out his friend is having computer problems, and while Bill's busy with that, he made me his courier. Now we're off to another Game Corner, apparently.

I suppose it's time for an update on my Nuzlocke too.

After a few more hours of failing to find a thunderstone in the underground, I gave up and decided to just get the one in the Solaceon ruins. I beat Fantina with Nicole rather easily by spamming bite. I beat Barry on my way out of town, went to Solaceon and headed straight for the ruins to grab all the loot there. I evolved Evan into a Jolteon, then did some training against the locals to help him catch up with Nicole and Theodore. Next we went to Veilstone, where we saw Dawn again. Next up was the fight with Maylene. Since Nicole was the strongest and had a Intimidate to boot, she took charge again here. This was actually a rather close fight. Her first Pokemon was a piece of cake, but Lucario was a beast. Lucario used force palm, Nicole countered with Spark. Then Lucario used Force Palm again, and got a critical hit. Nicole survived with 1 HP and was paralyzed, but was able to pull off one more attack and beat Lucario. Then I switched Theodore in to take out her last Pokemon. We won! Upon leaving the gym, we saw Dawn again. Some team galactic goons had taken her pokedex, so we teamed up to take it back. The goons ran away, giving back the pokedex and dropping an HM to boot. Now we're on our way to fight Wake.

So I've decided that once I'm done with this Nuzlocke, I'm going to try a monotype run. Not as a nuzlocke, but it should still be quite challenging, because the type I'm choosing is bug, and there are only 6 of them in FRLG prior to beating the Elite Four the first time (and two of them are scyther and pinsir, so I can't even get a full team in a single version). But, before I do that, I need to finish the nuzlocke.

BATTLE THREE: CLOCKE VS AGATHA

  • ROUND ONE: ELSA VS GENGAR
    • Elsa uses Shadow Ball! Gengar drops to critical health.
    • Gengar uses Shadow Punch! Elsa's Leftovers restore health to 162/178.
    • Agatha uses Full Restore!
    • Elsa uses Shadow Ball! Gengar drops to just above critical health.
    • Elsa uses Shadow Ball! Gengar faints!
  • ROUND TWO: ELSA VS HAUNTER
    • Elsa's Leftovers restore her to full health.
    • Elsa uses Shadow Ball! OHKO!
  • ROUND THREE: ELSA VS GENGAR

    • Gengar uses Hypnosis! Elsa falls asleep.
    • Elsa is asleep. Her Leftovers restore health to 162/178.
    • Clocke plays the Poke Flute! Elsa wakes up.
    • Gengar uses Shadow Ball! It's no more effective than before. Leftovers recover to 136/178.
    • Gengar uses Shadow Ball! Elsa falls to just over half health.
    • Elsa uses Shadow Ball! Gengar faints!
  • ROUND FOUR: ELSA VS GOLBAT
    • Leftovers restore health to 113/178.
    • Elsa uses Ice Beam! Golbat drops into the yellow.

    • Elsa uses Ice Beam! Golbat faints!
  • ROUND FIVE: ELSA VS ARBOK
    • Elsa's attack is dropped by Intimidate. Elsa recovers to 106/178.
    • Elsa uses Earthquake! Arbok drop to critical health.
    • Arbok misses its attack!
    • Agatha uses Full Restore!
    • Elsa uses Shadow Ball! Arbok takes minimal damage. Elsa recovers to 128/178.
    • Elsa uses Earthquake! Arbok faints!
    • Elsa reaches level 56!

Victory Clocke!

BATTLE FOUR: CLOCKE VS LANCE

  • ROUND FOUR: ELSA VS DRAGONITE
    • Elsa uses Ice Beam! Dragonite drops into the yellow!
    • Dragonite uses Outrage! Elsa loses about 40% health. Dragonite is poisoned by Poison Point!
    • Elsa recovers to 119.181. Dragonite's Sitrus Berry restores health which is then taken away by poison.
    • Elsa uses Ice Beam! Dragonite faints!
  • ROUND FIVE: MAGNETRON VS AERODACTYL
    • Aerodactyle uses Ancientpower! Critical hit! Magnetron loses about 35% health.

    • HedlyLamar uses Drill Peck! It... does less than half of Exeggutor's health in damage.
    • Exeggutor uses Egg Bomb! It missed.
    • HedlyLamar uses Drill Peck! Exeggutor drops to critical.
    • Exeggutor uses Sleep Powder! Hedly's out like a light.
    • Clocke plays the Poke Flute while Gaws uses Full Restore. Alakazam's Reflect fades.
    • Hedly use Drill Peck! Exeggutor drops to critical!
    • Exeggutor uses Sleep Powder! Hedly's down again.
    • Clocke plays a flute encore while Gaws pops another Full Restore.
    • Hedly uses Drill Peck! Exeggutor holds on just above critical health.
    • Exeggutor uses Sleep Powder! Hedly is getting tired of this in more ways than one.

Guess who just joined the party? Only the best pokemon ever.

Current Team:
Craig, lv53 Blastoise, relaxed
Trina, lv53 Primeape, quiet
Timothy, lv53 Vileplume, quirky
Felicity, lv53 Fearow, jolly
Stan, lv53 Jolteon, naive
Hyacinth, lv53 PonytaRapidash, quirky

So, after that business with Bill and Lostelle, we decided to explore the Sevii Islands a bit. Or at least the parts we had access to. And then we managed to catch a Ponyta! (On Mt. Ember, appropriately enough.) I was practically jumping for joy, Ponyta is pretty much my favorite pokemon ever.

Did a lot of training at Berry Forest, where there was an abundance of pokemon weak to fire. Pidgeotto gave us quite a bit of trouble, though, with its Quick Attack and Whirlwind. Pidgeotto is like the king of trolls in this area. Quick Attack on the first turn, survive a hit with Flamethrower, then deny us the experience by using Whirlwind. Jerk.

Hyacinth is quirky like Timothy, but while the Vileplume is more outgoing, the Ponyta tends to be more socially awkward. She doesn't walk so much as hop about when traveling. She seems to like bouncing around when she thinks no one's watching, and apparently she can jump really high up. As if it wasn't bad enough for the Grass and Bug types that she can burn them to death, she also has a Flying move at her disposal.

I finally decided to teach Timothy the moves Sunny Day and Solarbeam. I like using the combo for long trainer battles, since he gets pretty dizzy if he has to keep doing Petal Dance more than twice in a row. It's also helped Hyacinth's fire attacks, on some occasions.

After we'd had our fill of the islands, we headed back to the mainland for the final gym. And guess who turns up as the gym leader? None other than the Rocket boss, Giovanni. Timothy started with Sleep Powder, but the Rhyhorn woke up too early and managed to hit with Earthquake just as we were getting our sun on. Good thing the Grass resist counters the Poison weakness to Ground-type attacks, or we would have been in trouble. But we eventually got away with a rapid-fire Solar Beam, taking down Giovanni's first three pokemon.

Then it was time for Nidoqueen, whose Poison type offsets the weakness to Grass. So we had Craig take over to hit with Surf. But the lingering effect of Sunny Day weakened the Water move, letting Nidoqueen survive for one extra turn. Fortunately it wore off in time to defeat the last pokemon, Nidoking, in one hit.

Giovanni gave us the final badge as well as the TM for Earthquake, then ran off with his tail between his legs. I taught Earthquake to Trina, then tested it in a double battle alongside Felicity. They do pretty well together.

Ran into Gary on the way to Victory Road, but we were ready for him. Craig froze the Pidgeot in two turns with Ice Beam (I'm surprised it wasn't a one-hit, but whatever). Hyacinth totally demolished the Venusaur with one Fire Blast. Timothy won the dance-off against Rhyhorn in the third round. Stan took a Bite out of Alakazam, but it survived and managed to pull off a Disable before the Jolteon finished it off with Thunderbolt. Trina put the newly-learned Earthquake to good use against Growlithe, then Stan came back to end the battle by using Thunder to deal massive damage against Gyarados.

Now we have to make our way to Indigo Plateau, but we'll have to make sure we get enough levels before challenging the Elite Four. I want to get through this with everyone still alive. (I know there's some kind of bonus content after beating the Elite Four the first time, but I don't think I'll bother. I want to do a second Nuzlocke run, still Fire Red, but with some extra rules. And also using Charmander as the starter.)

Time for another update. After dealing with team Galactic at Veilstone, I backtracked to the Solaceon tower because I thought that's where the Strength HM was. I think I was remembering it from Pearl. Point is, I was wrong. I did get some training done though. Then I went back to Veilstone and went south to the resort and Pastoria. I beat Barry in front of the gym, then beat Wake with ease. Upon leaving the gym with Wake, we heard a massive explosion. Team Galactic had just detonated a bomb in the great marsh. While Wake and Barry went in to rescue anyone who might have been inside when the bomb went off, I hopped on my bike and chased after the culprit. I chased him all the way to the lake, and even beat his Pokemon, but he escaped. The path to the lake was blocked by a camera crew, which I think we're just Galactic grunts in disguise. Cynthia arrived at the resort and asked me to run an errand for her, so now I'm on my way to Celestic town.

You generally only need 1 or 2 attacks per pokemon. And you can use T Ms to teach new moves in between battles.

Also, all the moves I plan to use have 10 or 15 PP. I avoid 5 PP moves due to low accuracy.

I think we're ready for the Elite Four now.

Current Team:
Craig, lv60 Blastoise, relaxed
Trina, lv62 Primeape, quiet
Timothy, lv60 Vileplume, quirky
Felicity, lv62 Fearow, jolly
Stan, lv60 Jolteon, naive
Hyacinth, lv62 Rapidash, quirky

Traversed the sokoban puzzle of Victory Road and gained a few levels for everyone except Hyacinth. The type matchups were, for the most part, very not advantageous for her.

Instead, we did the rest of the training on Kindle Road, in the area just outside of Ember Spa. We were able to level steadily and consistently thanks to the VS Seeker, despite the ~20 level difference. This also had a side effect of generating a ton of cash, which resulted in us purchasing so many vitamins that we got to a point where pretty much nothing worked on anyone anymore. The team is just that strong by now.

I figured level 60 was a good place to stop, but there were exceptions. Hyacinth gets a few extra because she's going to go up against our nemesis, Venusaur, and that pokemon has some pretty tough stats. Trina and Felicity because their stats are a bit low for their level compared to the others, so I figured they could use a little extra for insurance.

With our remaining money, we stocked up on supplies. Like really stocked up. 23 Fresh Water, 32 Lemonade, 30 Hyper Potions, 30 of each individual status cure, 30 Full Heals, and 30 Full Restores. All that, and we still have 3211 in cash left over.

I'm going to let the team get some well-needed rest. After that, it's time for the final showdown.
