Spider-Man General Discussion

Go To

This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
  • Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.

Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

     Original Thread OP
Since everyone likes talking about him. I know little about him(Ironically,I got nearly all I know about him from a Batman thread),but he's apparently important so I made this thread. Enjoy.

I'm guessing Wells has specific ideas for his status quo at the end of the run.

[up][up]I get the feeling that MJ will break the Spider who gobbles again at the end, and they will reconcile, and be open to dating in time for the next run.

I feel Wells has been winging it since "Dead Language", say what you want about the quality of his work throughout, but that first year he seemed to have a vision that he saw through to the end, everything after that event has reeked of the kind of reactionary backtracking, second guessing, and rewriting that was rumoured to have plagued Spencer's run, only it's more apparent this time.

[up][up] They've realized they can get away with anything at this point. No matter how bad things get, no matter how pathetic they've made Spider-Man, the comics will still sell.

They have no incentive to undo one more day, only incentive to keep it. Even Ultimate Spider-Man profits from how bad the main comic is doing, it wouldn't have sold as much as it did if OMD and Paul weren't the status quo.

This is why I've pretty much given up on 616 Peter. He's a doomed Spider-Man.

Spider-Girl's Peter Parker from MC 2 is the 'real' Spider-Man (he used to even be advertised as such on Spider-Girl books), he's the one with all the original history up 'till 1998 and nothing afterwards counts

[up][up]It's kinda hilarious you say that considering we're seeing objective proof to contrary, as Ultimate Spider-Man is hilariously kicking the 616 book's ass month after month in terms of both sales and reception.

[up]That's my attitude as well. MC2 is my canon Spider-Man, with some of the Post-Clone Saga highlights like the JMS run included as Broad Strokes.

Exactly my point. Amazing Spider-Man being so bad means readers will flock more to Ultimate Spider-Man.

And Amazing Spider-Man still sells, that's what matters to Marvel. So they can peddle the shitty status quo to get people to buy the actual good book.

[up][up][up] Also, Marvel probably already made the contract with Zeb Wells to write the book to the until the certain number, so they have to keep him around until his contract with ASM is done.

They don't want to undo OMD because it does give what they want, a standard version of character that everyone can jumped in and jumped out for the comic.

It's like the same reason back when Dragon ball editor did not want Goku to grow up because he was afraid there's going to be a backlash over the protagonist's change of status quo and the readers aren't going to adjust with the new status quo.

Speaking of MC2, I wonder what a similar setting would look like if it branched off from more modern continuity.

With Miles now in the mix, he might be one of Mayday’s mentors.

The future Avengers would probably look different since there’s more young heroes to choose from

Normie has gotten even more characterization so he might be different and he’s besties with Dylan or something.

Well, it would be a third take. I think Renew Your Vows was the take 2 of the spider-daughter AU

[up]I saw a piece of fan-art a while back of Mayday and Miles hanging out, with Mayday calling him Uncle Miles and being mentored by him, and I definitely gotta say I love it.

[up]×2

I wonder how Hulk would be treated in a new MC 2.

Best case scenario would him living in the Savage Land with Skaar and the Warbound.

[up]That's a pretty cool idea. Have him as a kind of barbarian king who finds peace in the Savage Land with the Warbound. You could also maybe bring in some of the lore from Immortal Hulk in some way.

Hey, what happened to the Warbound? Does Hulk still keep in touch with them?

[up][up] It could also be a way to get a completely Marvel-owned Suspiciously Similar Substitute for the Exiled from Continuity Conan the Barbarian (and thus fill the niche that Marvel losing the Conan license left) without having to make up another Barbarian Hero Conan knockoff from scratch or bring one of the existing ones out of mothballs.

[up][up]They seem to have mostly just fucked off back to space to live their lives. Their most recent appearance was during Civil War II, where they were among Bruce's family and friends who attended his funeral and will-reading, complete with Korg giving a really nice speech about what Hulk meant to him. They haven't really been brought up since than, to the point of being among the unlucky few bits of Hulk lore that Ewing didn't get a chance to really touch on in Immortal Hulk before it ended. Think it says a lot about how good that run is that my only major complaint about it is feeling that it wasn't longer, because Ewing really tried to give some love to every major character and era of Hulk and ultimately couldn't tackle everything before handing the book to Cates.

I'd really love a return to Sakaar in general. Not only is Planet Hulk easily one of the best Hulk stories ever, but the lore and worldbuilding for Sakaar is just *chef's kiss* perfect.

Korg still shows up from time to time, especially when Greg Pak writes something Hulk related.. The others haven't shown up in awhile.

I can't WAIT to see the Spider who Gobbles vs the Kingpin. Bonus points if Kingpin announces that Spider-Goblin has rigged the city to blow to the people of New York.

Points if anyone can get the reference.

How many times has Fisk ever been the unquestioned Big Bad of a major story in Spider-Man's corner after the Silver Age?

Like almost every thing I see him in, he's always something of a Big Bad Wannabe.
