Spider-Man General Discussion

Go To

This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
  • Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.

Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

     Original Thread OP
Since everyone likes talking about him. I know little about him(Ironically,I got nearly all I know about him from a Batman thread),but he's apparently important so I made this thread. Enjoy.

"Like, she actually prefers Miles having friends who knows what he's doing, like Ganke." I'm inclined to agree with her. I much prefer when the hero's supporting cast are in on the secret, or at least most of them are. The idea of not telling them in order to protect them strikes me as not even making sense. I can understand not telling someone who might not keep it a secret. But if the hero trusts the person? They should tell them.

[up]Yeah, one thing I rather liked about Bendis' Ultimate Spider-Man is that pretty much all of Peter's friends and loved ones end up in the know. Not only did it lead to a lot of great interactions and character development, but it just made sense from a logical perspective.

I get why classic Spidey didn't have anyone in on the secret since it was to contrast him with superheroes like Batman who had Robin.

But that reasoning doesn't vibe well with the next generation.

Granted, Miles does have to keep his identity a secret from his mom and dad.

Characters like Electro really need an update or at least a costume change.

Also I like how Ultimate Bullseye all but confirms the existence of the Illuminati, like dude shut up why are you yelling this out loud?

[down] Got it, I'll spoil it.

Bruh, might wanna spoiler that, I just finished reading issue 3.

But as for your question, it's Bullseye, typical bad guy idiocy. What kind of assassin gloats and explains things to his target? A really stupid one.

I like Peter keeping the secret to himself for the most part so the ones who do know his secret are more special for it. Especially MJ, of course.

I do like more people over time learning his identity, Aunt May knowing in JMS' run was really cool, as was the time Curt Conners knew (before he became an asshole), and there's Felicia, Johnny Storm, Matt Murdock... it's mostly other heroes you know, I suppose, but that's fair as Peter's closest friends are fellow heroes.

People have tried to give Electro costume changes many times, but making him blue or turning him into a random bald guy don't stick out as much as bright green and yellow do.

My favorite update on his design was Web of Shadows, where all they did was replace the tights with jeans and keep everything else the exact same. The mask worked really well with the venomized look, too.

You'll see this a lot with characters with historically silly designs, where trying to make them cool and epic is instantly reverted because the new design isn't as memorable. Over in DC they've done this with Killer Moth like five times.

Yeah, for all people dunk on Electro's costume, none of his other looks are anywhere near as memorable or fun, and the only redesigns for him that look good are ones that keep the general vibe of the green and yellow. It's superhero comics, characters are allowed to wear zany outfits.

I think a really good way to make it look cooler though would be mixing it with the MTV Spider-Man's portrayal of Electro as basically an electric ghost. Maybe make Max look more like a demonic skeleton of electrical energy animating the costume.

[up] I always found Electro's star-faced mask is what makes his costume memorable.

Superior Spider-Man does continue to be a fun read, Slott confirmed in a chain on his Threads account that he intends for it to be a 'Frenemies' book for Otto and Pete, sometimes they'll fight one another, sometimes they'll be allies, and every issue's cliffhanger 'alters' the status quo a little more.

Doctor Octopus is Dan Slott's pet character. Like that's not even an insult since I do like the way Slott writes him, but it's amusing that THIS is the major thing that Slott's working on with his grand return to the Spider-Man corner of the universe.

And at least Slott knows how to handle the Goblin Octopus relationship.

[up][up] Is it? Hasn't he gone from Spider-verse to Spider-boy to this?

It feels like End of Spider-verse was the major return for him, and this is just running a gauntlet through different things.

Feels like Slott's reached the point where he can just chill out and comfortably write what he wants.

It's like how they have Peter David writing all the Maestro and Spider-Man 2099 books.

So question, is the Maker still around in the Ultimate universe?

Like this would affect Spider-Man.

He's still around, he's just trapped.

Ultimate Invasion ended with him getting knocked in the scuffle against Kang by Howard and are currently locked in the City for the next century.

Which to the outside world the City is locked and will only open in a year leaving the Illuminati unsure of what to do with Maker's presence.
