I'm surprised to hear that Assault wasn't enjoyed. I found it to be pretty damn fun, even if admitedly that's 15 years old me talking.

Multiplayer was amazing though, of that I'll hear no dissent.

[up] I remember I had that one when I was like 7.

I think that had the Borg as villains right?

Borg insects, essentially. Also the only villains without any connections to our dear baddie Andross.

I loved Assault. But yes, the game does feel too short with not enough replayability.

[up]x4 There's a surprising amount of people who dislike the game. Personally I enjoyed it, but acknowledge its flaws. Still hoping for a remake or new game that improves upon Assault's formula.

When it comes to favorite music, I tend to favor the music from the first game the most, though I like this track from Adventures. Pretty atmospheric and fits the mood well.

Assault was mostly a multiplayer-focused game. Its roots to arcades was prominent.

Remember those rumours that said Retro Studios was going to make a Star Fox racing game called Star Fox Grand Prix? Yeah, that was just a rumour and the thing never existed at all. Also: I did not know until just now that there was a racing mode in Starlink: Battle for Atlas.

I'll admit that I bought into the "Nintendo made the fake leak" explanation myself. Wild to know that this all began from someone sharing a mock logo a friend made and IGN going "sure, sounds legit".

Sad thing is, a Star Fox racing game does sound like a cool idea.

Such a good idea, Fox and Falco becoming professional racers was one of the nine endings in Command.

Someone has found the demo that inspired the franchise 30 years later.

So, I recently set up my Wii U solely to play games with my daughter and picked up Zero. I found it pretty fun and perfectly playable normally, I just mostly ignored the Wii U pad... until I got to the first boss fight which locked the camera onto the boss and suddenly my plans went out the window.

Jesus Christ. What a disaster this control scheme is. I get the idea, and it would be cool for a targeting computer a la A New Hope when Luke pulls the computer over his eyes and for something like a trench run that could be really fun for a climactic scene where you have to control your ship and aim using the pad, but for moment to moment gameplay it's just tiring. It's definitely doable, but it's not fun. Honestly, in some ways I think Zero might be the worst game I've ever played because it could work so well but it actively sabotaged itself to be utterly unfun if you play it right.

It was thanks to Shigeru Miyamoto's insistence that the game have some form of innovative control that utilizes the Wii U Gamepad... and that was the unfortunate result. I absolutely hated having to constantly "re-center" the aiming reticle.

It's a real shame too; if you're willing to overlook the control issues the game itself is pretty fun and replayable, albeit easy.

I'm probably one of the 5 people on this planet that enjoyed the Star Fox Wii U game. [lol]

When I tried The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, I really struggled with the controls, up until partway through the second dungeon, when things finally clicked into place. Likewise, I was able to adapt to Zero's controls, but when a majority of consumers can't, that's an issue. Not helping is the fact that the two screen thing is so thoroughly baked into the gameplay that reworking the game to play on a single screen with no motion controls means rebuilding the entire game from the ground up, otherwise I'm sure it would have been ported to the Switch by now to give the game a second chance at life.

It wouldn't be too bad for most of the Arwing sections, but I'd imagine the mini-helo and several of the boss fights (especially the final fight against Andross) would need a major redesign. And like I said before, the difficulty would need to be increased somewhat because most of the challenge came from having to manage both screens and keeping the reticle centered and accurate.
