Has anyone played this game long enough to know if there are any Christmas/holiday discounts on the Cartel Market or something? I almost feel enough incentive to buy stuff for this game, but I'm just not there yet.

There's almost always something discounted on the cartel market, though it's generally either new stuff they're trying to push, or seasonal stuff (eg, Christmas-themed items in December). If you're looking for a discount on basics like character slot unlocks or the like, you're probably out of luck. But then again, I'm a subscriber, so I don't pay a whole lot of attention to that kind of thing, so I could be wrong.

Character slots were actually on discount last week.

Wait, someone's a subscriber here? I have an important question regarding a potential purchase. Do I need to buy a subscription AND an expansion pack separately, or do the expansion packs automatically come with subscriber status? Also, if my subscription runs out and I have Expansion packs, can I still use them?

Subscribers get the first expansion for free and keep it even if their subscription ends. Buying a month's subscription is a way better deal than buying Rot HC separately.

Subscribers will have to buy the second for now, but they'll probably get it for free in 6 months or so.

It's worth noting that buying the second expansion also gets you the first one at no additional cost, even if you're not a subscriber.

Here's a five-use code for that Community Cantina speeder:

Redeeming it gives you a code that five more people can use, so be sure to give some away to other people.

Star Wars™: The Old Republic™ – The largest story-driven expansion to date, Knights of the Fallen Empire, marks a renewed focus on cinematic storytelling in Star Wars: The Old Republic. The expansion will deliver on the hallmarks of what makes a great Bio Ware™ game: new worlds to explore, new companions to recruit, and a dynamic story that players will be able to shape based on the choices they make.

...new companions? Hopefully that's right, and hopefully there's more content than Treek.

Though I admit I wish more of the current companions contributed to the post-class story.

Ugh, I need to get a Windows computer again so that I can finish the Consular storyline. This has renewed my interest in this game. Who are those guys? What is this new faction?

I was actually thinking of symbolism between the Light and Dark sides, Dexen being the better, more aggressive fighter would be the Dark Side while his brother Arcann being the Light Side. Then they swapped roles at the end of the trailer.

I do like the design aesthetic of the Eternal Empire though. It seems much more grand than the Republic or the Sith.

So are they dropping the Emperor plotline?

Considering that the Eternal Empire apparently royally wrecks both the Sith and the Republic I would say so.

Either this new guy is a pawn of Vitiate, Vitiate is a pawn of the new guy, or Vitiate will be the Big Bad of the storyline of new Operations while the new guy is the single-player story content Big Bad.

Vitiate seems too big a threat to really just ignore even for a bit, so I'm hoping he's fairly involved in the story. Although I admit he isn't my favourite antagonist.

"You're able to recruit help and additional companions from an expanded cast, including companions who were previously exclusive to other classes," said Maclean. "Building that alliance involves going to all the planets in the galaxy and doing activities and missions that build faction. If you want to recruit a character who's favorable to the Mandalorians, you'll be able to do missions for them. You want to recruit a character who hates the Hutts, you'll do missions to build your alliance standing against them."

If they can actually deliver on this, it'll be great.

So. That cinematic from the other day.

I didn't like it too much at first- it was better than the others, but not by much- but I'm starting to appreciate it a bit better now. Probably would've enjoyed it more if I actually had a reason to give a shit about anyone in the trailer, though. They just seemed like some random dudes who were vaguely Sith-y and were at odds with both the Republic and Empire.

but HOW?

Pretty much. Definitely wasn't up to the standards of the original three trailers in my book, but I'll be interested to see how they segue the storyline from the current shenanigans about the Sith Emperor to this new stuff.

Incidentally, they announced a few days ago that they're discounting character transfers to 90 cc each until further notice, so if anyone playing wants to move servers prior to the expansion, now's the time. I've been running with a guild based out of Ars Technica, which had a guild on Beregen Colony and another on Prophesy of the Five, but participation on both servers has dropped off, so we're discussing consolidating. Ebon Hawk seems like the server to be on these days; it's supposed to have the highest population and the best community, so we might end up moving there.

Ironically, Ebon Hawk is where I played at launch; I moved to BC in order to play with the Ars guild there. Moving back would amuse me greatly.

So more info on the expansion has been released. Here's the most informative article I can find:

Summary of info that I've found:

  • Looks like most of the new content is single player.
  • The time skip is five years.
  • Many of your old companions will appear in the new content, some in plot critical roles. These companions will appear regardless of your class.
  • Your previous decisions (including romances) will matter.
  • Starting a character at level 60 will have some impact on the story, but Bioware is not saying what that is.
  • The expansion does not stop you from visiting old planets. Looks like Gameplay and Story Segregation will apply with the timeskip.
  • One of the new planets is Zakuul, capital of the Eternal Empire. Zakuul's environment supposedly has some nice variety to it.
  • Your character is now The Chosen One who will save the Republic and Sith Empire from the Eternal Empire. Both of the old factions will support you in your quest.
  • Bioware insists that the Eternal Empire is not an Ass Pull and was foreshadowed in "Shadow of Revan"
  • E3 demo summary:
    • Lana Beniko wakes you up from carbonite. She tells you that you were captured by the Eternal Empire because of something you did that Bioware isn't saying for spoiler reasons and frozen. Your companions are still alive, but have gone their separate ways. You and Lana fight your way out.
    • You eventually fight two "Knights of Zakuul" who are immune to Force persuasion. You capture one of them, but the other retreats. You can spare or kill your captive. If you spare the captive, Lana disapproves, but the other Knight will remember your mercy. If you kill the captive, Lana approves, but the other Knight will come back for vengeance later on.
    • You are confronted by Vaylin, the Force using daughter of Emperor Valkorian. Lana attempts to sacrifice herself so you can retreat, but HK-55, who is programmed to protect meatbags instead of assassinating them, helps you and Lana escape.
    • During your retreat, you find a failing "Sun Generator" that is powering a nearby city. Your pilot, Koth Vortena, wants you to save the generator, but Lana considers it to be a waste of time. Saving the generator is a lengthy optional sidequest. Your decision will have an impact when you visit the city the generator is powering later on.
