A relatively new Indie game, A.R.E.S.: Extinction Agenda is the first in an episodic series of games. This game is basically Vanquish in 2D, except the protagonist is a robot, and the Russians are replaced by Precursors who thinks humanity was a mistake and wants to exterminate them with a superweapon.

The game is a Sprite/Polygon Mix with retro-style side-scrolling action, featuring 360-degree shooting, plenty of enemies, a combo, points and ranking system, two difficulty levels, and upgradable weapons through collecting bits and pieces dropped by enemies (thankfully, grinding for parts doesn't get boring). Personally, I think it's a lot of fun and worth the asking price, and one of the perks of episodic gaming is that the developers can use criticism to improve the gameplay for the next episode.

This game is available on Steam and XBLA, but my advice is to buy the Steam version, because it plays better with a mouse and keyboard (trust me, I've tried both control schemes), and the Steam version has two sweet-looking exclusive armour sets.

Oh, yeah, Dr. Julia Carson is freaking HOT. Tube tops work rather well with unbuttoned lab coats. Also, she threatens to shoot you with a gun she has on her, when you finally rescue her, implying she's been holding her own against the robots.
