A game world that is truly alive. And by that I mean that events will happen whether you take part in them or not. And you can truly do what you want. Want to join the army sign up and go to war. Want to be a lecherous perv who spend all day hitting on the village girls you can do that to.

^The way I picture something like that working is an MMO world where there are no NP Cs. Everyone's a player.

Short of developing a smart AI, there's no other way to do that.

Oh, I'm not saying it's completely impossible. I'm saying that whoever makes that needs to do it that way.

And I definitely want someone to make that.

One of my friends who took a class about the study of online communities told me about some small MMO that did the whole no-NPC thing and the emergent social behavior was actually kind of interesting.

I don't remember the game's name though

It's not that unlike Shenmue, I think.

I haven't played it, but what I've heard of, yeah, like that, but on an absurdly large scale.

^^Know any more details? It sounds fascinating.

^No, from what I understand, Shenmue isn't an MMO, it just has really developed, fully voiced bit characters who go about their daily lives and a large amount of freedom.

I just remember that one of the major factions that emerged was a police force that kept order through strength of arms. Also I think they were all on a space station.

I'll ask him if he remembers what it was when he gets online or something.

Hm, that's what I'd have expected to happen. Interesting. I wasn't sure if I'd be right.

The ability of people to report crimes from beyond the grave must have made things easy.

I was thinking about a third Marvel Ultimate Alliance game taking place during World War II, using characters who were around at that time. The story would be that the Nazis (disregard No Swastikas!) have suddenly seemed to gain more advanced technology (as in some modern weapons), and seem to be one step ahead of Allied forces. The hero team captures the Red Skull and interrogates him, until he is freed by a few Nazi and HYDRA agents led by another Red Skull. It turns out that this is the modern Red Skull, who traveled through time to ensure the victory of Hitler's forces. This creates an alternate timeline, allowing certain characters to meet without ruining continuity (Cap and Thor, for example). The hero team has to fight Nazis and HYDRA, liberate a concentration camp or two, and discover the secrets of the future Red Skull. Gameplay would be a mixture of the last two games. RPG elements and multiple alternate costumes would return from the first, with character Fusions and dialogue trees returning from the second. Characters would include:

  • Captain America - He would act as the central character, and a leader for the team. He would play just like in the other games.
  • Bucky - He would be represented as older than he was in the 40s comics, and his costume would be cooler. He would use guns, similar to his more modern portrayals (but not at Winter Soldier levels).
  • Wolverine - Wolverine would play like he does in the other games, but would have his bone claws. He would be wearing a military uniform, but his more modern costumes with adamantium claws can be unlocked.
  • Nick Fury - This would be the old Nick Fury, before the Infinity Formula, before SHIELD, and before the eyepatch. The leader of the Howling Commandoes would use guns for his specials.
  • Namor - Namor would be arrogant as ever, and his attacks would be mostly physical.
  • The Human Torch - The original Human Torch was an android who could set himself on fire. He would play slightly differently from the modern version, and his sidekick Torro would not be playable.
  • Sabretooth - This would be Sabretooth much earlier, without as much as a rivalry with Wolverine, and more of a partnership. He would be fast and brutal.
  • Union Jack - The Brian Falsworth incarnation. He would use his dagger and Webley .455 caliber pistol.
  • Blazing Skull - Not a very well known character. Basically a guy whose face is a flaming skull, and has fire powers. Not Ghost Rider.
  • Whizzer - Another obscure one. Relies on super speed.
  • Dum Dum Dugan - Another member of the Howling Commandoes, who uses WWII-era weapons.
  • Thor - An unlockable character, Thor would play like he does in the other games.
  • Magneto (DLC) - Magneto as a child. He would appear in the story as one of the prisoners rescued by the heroes, and his future would be hinted at. As a playable character, he would be very in-control of the environment around him, and would be small and maneuverable. He would also look dirty and starved.
  • Iron Fist (DLC) - This would be the man who was Iron Fist before Daniel Rand, being Orson Randall. Even though he fought in WWI, he was around at this time and could be used as a character, using chi-enfused attacks, and his dual pistols he charges with his chi.
  • Red Skull - The main villain of the game would be made into a playable character through DLC. He would use a pistol and his dust of death.

The skillshot system created by Bulletstorm is a pretty interesting concept, but I wonder if anybody else wants to see the system implemented on another, better established shooter series...

like, say, Call Of Duty?

How's about this? In RT Ses, when infantry enter buildings, they usually go in and that's pretty much it. The building tends to be either a status effect improving infantry durability, or they take damage for the infantry instead.

That's boring! How about making the buildings extensions of the map? Infantry enter the building, the building acts as cover that may or may not protect them and the infantry may move around within the building to better reposition themselves to what's happening outside. Fighting against infantry in bigger and taller buildings will require stronger interaction than "Use anti-building counter.". A few RT Ses use cover mechanics, but none of them have much depth when we get to the buildings.

Because there are so many factors to sending troops inside a building to clear out people already in there, then you've got interior architecture to account for, and it is so much simpler to say that "chucking in grenades or attacking the building with a flamethrower clears out infantry."

Now, you might see that in an FPS-RTS hybrid like Empires or Nuclear Dawn, but that's only because the mappers have built the structure and the creators might prefer more expansive spaces than a series of slightly cramped corridors.

[up] Yeah, I'm mostly referring to more hybrid-kinda games, which I'm currently feeling like they make good starts, but don't go all the way (in the way I mentioned.).

Re posting with an edit:

An urban fantasy open world sandbox game, with an Elemental based magic system for the main character with skill progression for multiple skills, with each skill having multiple sub-skills, with some skills inter-related:

  • Firearms, raising this skill raises all subskills, and its raised by shooting any weapon. Automatically increases reliability, increases stability and decreases recoil.
    • Sniper-rifles, raising this skill raises all skills with any sniper rifle, is automatically raised merely by dint of shooting any sniper-rifle.
    • Shotgun, raising this skill raises skill with most shotguns.
    • and so on for other weapon classifications.

  • Magic, raising this skill raises all subskills slightly, raised by casting spells. Automatically increases ease of use, range, ability to sustain, and mental ability.
    • Air/Force, raising this skill raises air-based spells and the ability to affect a greater amount or area, or the ability to do so more intensely.
    • fire ditto
    • water ditto
    • Earth ditto
    • electricity ditto
    • Frost ditto
    • Light ditto, but with an increase to precision and decreased effect on the player.
    • Sound, increasing this allows for better precision, louder sounds, and less effect on the player
  • Melee/close range, increasing this skill increases all subskills, and increases strike power or finesse. (Meant more to be a Difficult, but Awesome set, since obviously guns and magic are easy but awesome both.)
    • Small blades, increasing this increases ability to throw knives smaller than 5 inches.
    • Blades, increasing this increases the ability to dismember or cut things up.
    • Blunt, increases speed of attacks.
    • polearms, increases use in movement and in precision.
    • poles, increases magic slightly and increases movement ability.

All abilities can be used at any time, save for melee. Increasing firearms, for instance, means that a pistol can be used in melee combat. Increasing magic means that a spell can be used in firefights, eg electrify bullets, set them aflame. Increasing those skills cause increased reaction time, in the form of bullet-time. It is activated when the skills are used, and can be deactivated whenever.

Magic can be slotted into movement, both on foot and in car. For instance, earth magic can be used to increase jump-height, or to alter the landscape for easier turns. Fire magic can leave a trail behind the player as they run, or increase the speed of the car by increasing the engine power. Air can be used as levitation, or to modify the movement of the car. Some spells have more applications to movement than others.

The game will be first person, save for select points at which spells are used, which modify the environment in advantageous ways. It will be a large world, preferably about 1000 square miles. To facilitate this, low-powered graphics will be used. Though frankly I admit this is a lot.

Mobility is not restricted to horizontal. A parkour-style system is allowed, and can be augmented by magic. Using physically based magic, players can construct simple skis or ski-like things which can then be used with other magic for use as a makeshift vehicle.

The focus of the game is on the magic-system, but other factors should not be ignored. Preferably, cars should handle realistically or semi-realistically, with fuel needs and occasional maintenance. Car theft is entirely possible, though slightly discouraged as cars gain maneuverability as use goes on. Weapons should sound right, be relatively dangerous, and should be purchasable at both legitimate establishments and illegal ones.

Crime should be doable, for money or for lulz. But only fun crimes, such as theft. A harsh response can be expected, and due to the supernatural nature of the character, eventually expect a supernatural response. Money can be gained in both legal and illegal ways. (IE fence valuables or act as a delivery boy)

Side activities should be fairly numerous but not badly done, similar to GTA.

The Engine for character models should be Euphoria, as it is quite entertaining to watch them flop about.

Preferably, the environment should be destructible, with smaller buildings able to come down thanks to localized earth or fire or incredibly powerful force magic. Pyromania should be possible. Larger buildings could be destroyed, though it would take a massive magical or weaponry investment.

Sleep, is definitely possible, and doable in any building.

The environment should have cities, towns, mountains, farms, a sea, and plains. Not knowing anything about the local topography, New York would be good.

Basically, take New York City and countryside, add in a complex magic system and action RPG system, make it like a first person GTA, add in building destruction from Red Faction, and set it in motion. the biggest thing ever. Development time: 5 years. Requires 20 gigs of install. tongue

One morning, two college guys bring their questionably acquired magical talking Sea Bass, and go out fishing at a nearby river, cause there's fuck all else to do. Soon, a magical meteor, the size of a thimble, tears through one of their arms like a fucking steamroller through a gingerbread house, and he starts literally bleeding fountains. After his near death experience, which is played for laughs, a UFO conveniently falls from the sky, gives him a convenient orb, that turns into an arm made of pure energy, that tears through other things, and turns him 12 years younger. Now, with every military organization wanting his destructive power, he decides to have an adventure to save himself from an inevitable asskicking, and teams up with several members of supernatural races and organizations(All of them, cute girls, much to his Lolicon of a friend's delight), and tackle a sinister plot. This is supposed to be a parody of a JRPG, with dating sim mechanics not taken seriously, and a sense of humor that can get dark at times. Oh, and an overaching story line, and a myth arc, but who cares 'bout that?
