What Do Mexicans Like to See in a Story?

You see, I've got a Mexican protagonist so obviously whites won't read it, but I want to make sure someone reads it.

So far I've got tacos, and ponchos, and little yippy dogs wearing sombreros.

I feel like I'm going to get banned for this...

Is this a snowclone of the "What do girls like?" thread?

If so, the answer is a well written, non-offensive story. Not one inch less.

Another thing: Stay away from the Mexico-American war as far as you humanly can. There is no way that can work without offending someone.

You are so behind the times, you gotta make it about drugs, gangbangers and the American border.

On a kinda sorta snowclonish related subject, what do squids like to see in their stories?

It's not a snowclone, it's just trying to show you all what that thread and every thread like it really is. Speaking of which I want to make one of my characters a Mick, but how will the damned Scots relate to him? Northern Irish might be a good compromise, but it might just turn off the rest of Ireland, and the Brits and the Scots won't go for it anyway. No, I want to make him good old Catholic Irish but gosh, where to begin? I've compromised by writing a Canadian and just changing the name...

https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=12953683930A33544300&page=2#29 here's the thread with my original freak out. Actually, my original freak out is a bit more...what you might call...coloredful.

I'm not sure what you're trying to get at here, but my thread was suppose to be a request of tropes girls would like to see played straight, subverted, deconstructed, and whatnot. I apparently failed at getting that particular detail across clearly.

The point you got across was "Girls". You expect 'girls' (it's not the terminology that bothers me—girls, women, females, let's go with VAGINAS) to have something inside them, unifying them into something you can understand. You know what I'm not? A VAGINA. I'm a complex organism—a human, actually, and I've probably got as much in common with you, Sand, buddy, fellow human, as I have with lets go with Mr. AHR, with the obvious exception of AHR and I both having VAGINAS.

I like diet coke, and the color green, and moody post-apocalyptic sci fi and dry, understated humor that makes you smirk instead of laugh, and I like betrayal tropes and the aesthetics of overstylized comic-book blood and similar splattering liquids, and I have a special love-hate relationship with those books where the interesting part of the story is held back until the very end—happening offscreen—and then told in a single shot of epic, and if you showed all that to another person—any other person—EVEN IF THEY HAD A VAGINA— they would wonder what you were going for and why you were in their house showing them this thing and that's because I think with my brain not my let's say it one more time for good measure VAGINA.

And no, bitches, I'm not on my period.

I'll just like to jump in and say that while there is no defined uniform taste for women in general, it is possible to write stuffs that offend them all.

The proper answer, therefore, is to write something that can be read and not offend anyone.

Eep...I was hoping to avoid the "OMG, you're asking a few girls and will now think that all of us think the same thing!" reaction. And you should really see how varied my female characters are. I've got numerous types, traits, and qualities spread out over hundreds of characters And not just the females. Even the guys are just as varied! So my thread was really just to see if I was on the right path.

...you just quote-summarized me with the phrase "OMG".

Come outside a minute and let me pummel you with my fists.

I know you're not going to come away from this thinking that all girls are violent and like the color green, but if you weren't trying to generalize...goddamnit, why did you ask? When you ask, you'll get the opinions of a few dozen girls, not just what they like, but what they think other girls like, and what we're building and maintaining is a society where this is ok, and where there's a little boy at home who also likes violence and the color green or, what was it, good characters? Holy fuck what does that mean, who doesn't like good character? And anyway now that hypothetical little boy has got to wonder if there's something wrong with him, because his penis never told him that violence is the kind of thing that only girls like, and that he ought to solve his problems with words like the other little boys or they won't play with him anymore.

Dropping from thread very, very quietly before this devolves into a flamefest.

Seriously though, guys, please, please calm down. OP, I can't help but feel you are overreacting a bit. Personally I saw Sand's question akin to an innocent "Mom, what should I give this girl for her birthday?" question, because there might as well be no other place to ask. Yes, it can be pointless when it comes to writing, but it does not deserve this kind of flak.

Overreactions like this make me think several dozen times before I bring forth anything in any forum, period.

Why did I ask? Because I'm really bad at asking the right kind of questions. Most of the time I need a sort of placeholder question before I can ask a more specific question.

Technically, people really can be generalized on a psychological level, and divided between the genders on a consistent basis, but if you're writing based on psychological formulas, then you should either write cheap romance or not be a writer at all.

I write pretty good fanfiction, sometimes.

it is possible to write stuffs that offend them all.

If that was true, they certainly seem to be different from certain men in that aspect.

@ Ed: Let's just say it was a bad memory from another forum speaking there.

Suffice to say, raising any question at all related to sexual abuse (as in, is the state of sexual abuse in the States really that bad?) meant quite a bit of lambasting on me.

It's not just Sand, ok? It's not this one question. It's this chasm we dig, and place people on either side of it based on superficial qualifications. It starts in preschool, when the boys line up on one side and the girls line up on the other, and the boys get to play in the mud and cut their hair short and the girls get to stay clean and grow their hair out long and pretty, and these things aren't decided by weather you want to get dirty or stay pretty, it's decided by the shape of your genitals.

I'm prolly not as worked up as it seems like I am. I'm too used to this shit to get worked up, but I think the whole damned vagina collective is too used to this shit to get worked up, and someone's going to have to pretend if things are going to get better. Please don't be afraid to bring something up, don't let my harsh diction and capitalization push you away.

I don't believe you. I...society...early conditioning... *trails off and sits in a corner alone*

I've shouted at someone saying "Then go chain yourself into the concrete and offer your body for public use" before and there were people who didn't get offended enough to even display a different facial expression in front of my eyes.

"All female humans" is around half the human world population, there's little that applies to everyone in the same way.

Well I'm neither girl or Mexican but I'd say a good writer doesn't follow generalizations. Understanding generalization my help(I feel like I said this before [lol]). But just don't let it control how you do anything.

I mean, I'm a guy in my teens and not even a little interested in satisfying my male hormones. Were you expecting that?

People vary ok?
