^ Indeed, the story is full of great laughs. When it comes to fun, Watchmen is not so impotent.

Something can be serious and still fun, fun doesn't require flippancy and being insubstantial. You might like only that kind of fun but some people get fun from a good story be it dark or light, to be honest I care more about a good story than having something shiny dangled in front of my face. some people really get off on the giant space apes fighting demonic super crocs, to me if it doesn't make sense in the story or work towards telling a story it just feels as hollow and empty as pointless ultra violence.

[up]Exactly. I mean I like crazy shit in my comics sometimes. But not always. That's the reason why I don't take Linkara's opinion that seriously.

As for the fun, I think one the things that Watchmen does (that movies like goodfellas and The Dark Knight did later) is that does laughs are there to provide contrast as well as making you ask "Why am I laughing at this?"

It's not exactly naive. And it can happen. But it's tough. And definetly worthwhile.

My two favorite eras are the Bronze and the modern because they're the only ones that struck any balance between immature and goofy and immature and violent. I want a mature story, as in one that requires adult intelligence to get the nuance of. I can be PG and be a good story.

Tits ass and blood for no reason is puerile and immature.

Flying space sharks with lazer eyes is puerile and immature.

You can make the elements work to tell a story, tits and ass can if nothing else evoke a sense of reality and maturity, like: she just got out of the shower because it's a morning scene and this is a morning conversation, we're not going to hide her nipples behind 200 things, deal with it.

Blood can work to make the action feel more visceral, that can make it exciting or more real.

Space Sharks can work if the point is to show and have a theme of strangeness. Personally either is equally stupid, insane you can show to kids at least, and blood and nips at least gives you nips.

Long story short: tell a good story with layers to it, a superficial layer that anyone can read, and a deeper story there for the adults, it could simply be a well developed relationship that tells us more about the characters, or something thematic for us to enjoy. A non Comic example would be the original star wars trilogy, if you watch as a kid it's very straight forward, and as an adult the plot is the same but you see a lot more working parts and a lot more to the characters and notice some thematic elements.

For me, I'm liking Watchmen on a more artistic level, with the heavy shadows and near monochromatic color tones. and certain visual cues Dave Gibbons uses to help us focus on certain moments in the book, like the bright yellow lighting that's hanging over Dan and Laurie near the end of the first chapter as they're in a restaurant catching up on old times. Also, it's a very interesting concept that still seems fresh in the context of the book despite being done to death numerous times, that is, what if some men and women decided to take the law up in their own hands, what happens if the responsibility becomes too much for them and the country abroad to the point where the government steps in and tries to bring it under control, the fallout of decision a person makes can have on the rest of the world, the psychological toll that being a super has on the person... the list goes on. But, yeah, I can see how Watchmen can be tough for newcomers to pick up. Some of the characterizations can be tough to get used to at first (Rorschach, Dr. Manhattan, and The Comedian, being the completely detached from all semblances of humanity, and, in regards to the former and latter, completely sociopathic in regards to what they've witnessed), (In fact, the only ones I've completely sympathized with so far are Dan, Laurie, Sally, Hollis, and Moloch) the Gorn can be pretty over-the-top and repulsive at times, and the brazenly politically incorrect language espoused in every other sentence by Rorschach can be uncomfortable in this day and age (again. Seinfeld Is Unfunny in full effect here), but it's definitely worth a read, if nothing else for the artistic detail.
