I'm pretty sure the Chomp is a full fledged partner since there was a screenshot of it being used in the field.
You got some dirt on you. Here's some more!Wait, where?
"Proto-Indo-European makes the damnedest words related. It's great. It's the Kevin Bacon of etymology." ~MadrugadaPersonally I'm hoping for a Blooper as a partner.
Or a Chargin' Chuck. Not that they've even been in any games for years.
You're an ad hominem attack!I still believe that chomp partner was an enemy turned into a freand or something, as he had a basic enemy chop design rather than a unique look like any other Paper Mario partner.
Too lazy to have a decent sig.If that's the case, it would be pretty disappointing. I rather like the characters in the Paper Mario games, so reducing the potential cast in favor of completely generic partners strikes me as a terrible thing.
Damned pokemon.
One screenshot I saw showed Mario with a book in his hand, so maybe that's him doing Tattle for himself?
"Proto-Indo-European makes the damnedest words related. It's great. It's the Kevin Bacon of etymology." ~MadrugadaI'd be fine with that, having to have a particular partner out to get information which is part of One Hundred Percent completion was annoying and meant they needed to use one of their precious few moveslots for it.

Ugh, the Pit of 100 Trials was a pain with that.
You got some dirt on you. Here's some more!Strangely, I didn't mind that so much, but being a dedicated user of the Quick Change badge and an unabashed fan of Goombella, that's probably no surprise.
"Proto-Indo-European makes the damnedest words related. It's great. It's the Kevin Bacon of etymology." ~MadrugadaI really hope that the game does have partners.
The graphics initially looked a bit bland and low-tech to me, but then I realized that the shading on everything in the gameworld resembles a massive papercraft (specifically those that fold up with lots of tabs and slots). Good call by Nintendo.
There better be unique partners. As much as I like the Mons design, the partners are half of what makes Paper Mario such an awesome game.
So Ruined Forever, So Bad Its Horrible, etc. etc.
One of my few regrets about being born female is the inability to grow a handlebar mustache. -LandstanderGosh, people get so riled up about a rumor resulting from one screen shot of the beta of a game still in development.
I'm pretty sure the chain chomp looked plain because they didn't make a unique model for the partner chomp yet, or because they didn't want to spoil it. Or the chain chomp is an item or something. But given that the game is going back to the RPG style, I'd be very surprised if they didn't go back to the partner system from the games before Super Paper Mario.
I like making the landscape look more papery, too. Though I kinda miss TTYD's "Stage" battlefield.
"Proto-Indo-European makes the damnedest words related. It's great. It's the Kevin Bacon of etymology." ~MadrugadaI just hope we get some completely new partners. A lot of them were recycled from the first game to The Thousand Year Door.
Quest 64 threadYeah, and TTYD had fewer partners as well. This is why I'm pulling for a Blooper. Or what about a Dry Bones? Not sure what its power would be, but it'd be interesting.
You're an ad hominem attack!Hmm, a Toad partner. I can't remember the first and second all that well, but I don't believe we've had one of those before. Also, those paper-based special attacks in battle look pretty neat.
Welcome to th:|The lack of partners being shown saddens me. Other than the Toad, but he could just be an NPC. Still, we don't have details yet, so hope springs eternal!
"Proto-Indo-European makes the damnedest words related. It's great. It's the Kevin Bacon of etymology." ~Madrugada^x2 Nope, never. We've only seen them as NPCs.
And "Reality" is unveiled. What did it want...? What did it see...? What did it hear...? What did it think...? What did it do...?There were two distinct toads there, so I'm thinking either placeholder or NPC. That said, partner dynamics made TTYD (I never finished the original, unofortunately). The game would be pretty bland without them.
Given that the series has had them in its past three installments, I don't think we'll totally lose them—there was also that Chain Chomp friend shown, after all—but they seem to be in a slightly different or diminished capacity, and that is sad. Still, speculating from a minute and a half of footage is good for no one.
"Proto-Indo-European makes the damnedest words related. It's great. It's the Kevin Bacon of etymology." ~MadrugadaYou young people, why I remember when RPGs were solo ventures! None of this need for 'partners' and 'parties'.

Modified Ura-nage, Torture Rack
I never said one had to enjoy it, merely that I thought it was closer to Paper Mario than Super Mario Bros. ...Er-hem.
: I believe I read somewhere that there's a "Charming" system in use here somewhere, so you can get enemies to temporarily fight for you. I don't know if that's a replacement for partners, merely another thing you can do, or if it's both, such that you can keep and raise enemies you fully tame.
