^The main trope page (I'm not sure who put it up) is of the opinion that most of the first half of episode 3 is Mami and Kyubey trying very hard to keep Madoka and Sayaka from making selfless wishes. Another theory I saw is that Mami wished 'not to die alone', so when Madoka promised to join her, she was Literal Genie'd.
Though I can't see how Sayaka's wish could really backfire in a way likely to cause her death... unless Kamijou gets a Witchkiss and kills her somehow.
It's been fun.I think it might be something to do with the exact wording of her wish. What's that trope again? Literal Genie or something? Anyway, I'm not really sure. I wish we knew what she said to Kyubey word for word.
Tumblr here. But she DID die alone!...if you ignore Charlotte dying soon afterwards that is, and assume alone means her being the only human that died.
"Every opinion that isn't mine is subjected to Your Mileage May Vary."^That's not what the phrase means. Yes, she was the only one who died, but she had people who cared about her at that point.
...Although, it's probably better that she had to stay alive to become a Puella Magi. Otherwise, I can imagine several other ways for a malevolent Literal Genie to fulfill that wish...
Oh hey look, it's a character sheet, by the way.
It's been fun.I'm considering suggesting this to my college animu club.
Anything I or they should know?
Or maybe because he's recovered he can be released from the hospital... and gets hit by a bus. That'd be such a lazy way to backfire the wish, though.
i. hear. a. sound.^^Make sure you know what you're getting into. It'll be funnier if they don't when you screen it, so you should catch up before you suggest it.
It's been fun.Anything objectionable enough that would get the club in trouble? Since we're a campus club, we have to have...Standards.
I can't see the wish being backfired in a meaningful or obvious way. Certainly not because she worded it badly. That would just be cheap and kind of stupid. I expect better from this show than that. Obviously this isn't going to go as planned for Sayaka, but I hope it's not because the wish itself was bad.
No sex or fanservice if that's what you're asking about.

Just tons of creeping dread and OH DEAR EFFING GOD gore? Terrific! I'll put it on the club request list!
There's no explicit gore either. Which kinda makes it creepier.
^You see just enough to make it all the worse.
It's been fun.Man, Literal Genie is so passé and I sure hope that's not what they're going for with this show. It's much more interesting when a wish gets fulfilled exactly how the wisher wanted it and then turns out not to be what the wisher wanted at all. Mami's wish could have been something as simple as "I don't want to die here" without any mustache-twirling villainy from Kyubey.
Please be gentle with me.I don't think they're going for literal genie here. Kyubey is the closest thing to Mephistopheles in this show, so he's going to play the wishes straight. It's the consequences of making the wish that it seems the show will focus on.
Also, I already want more Kyouko time.
I still like Mami being brought back by Madoka only to fold and be Driven to Suicide due to the PTSD she suffers from her nightmares about being beheaded and chomped on.
nishishishi~ Nii-nii no baka... .__.^For that reason alone, I hope Mami stays dead. That kind of thing would utterly break Madoka, so it might be good for a series end, but...
(Also, I liked Mami. She deserves not to be messed with like that.)
It's been fun.You know, wouldn't it be a nice twist if it would turn out that Kyubey/Kyubei doesn't really have any ulterior motive for granting wishes and ruining lives than making Magical Girls to combat witches?
I like the Madoka Magica wiki's list of reasons of why Kyubey is evil. One completely random one being that there are ears growing out of his ears. :D
Personally, I think I'd be disappointed. But I guess I'll wait for the bloodshed before I make a full decision.
Hmm... I guess True Neutral Kyubei WOULD be too boring at least compared to possibility of being evil cute animal thing..
Apparently the official site describes him as a messenger. So he may not be directly evil, but that doesn't rule out whoever he works for being a badguy
Thank goodness for word of mouth, or I'd never have seen this show. Wonder how many people won't even hear about it until after its run is over, and it gains a second life?
Re: ep4, this is going to end badly, and I'm not going to be able to look away. Kyubey appearing like some half-remembered nightmare in front of Sayaka just as she hits her breaking point was enough to turn my blood to ice. He is an irredeemable monster, and if he ISN'T, then there is no justification for the Herculean effort they've put into telegraphing that he is.
Damn, that's a good way to put it, and almost exactly how I felt about that scene. I almost expected him to say 'Are you ready to reconsider...?'
It's been fun.I can't be the only one who isn't getting freaked out about Kyubey or this show *...then again, I have a hard to getting scared to begin. *
So is this show based on any manga? If so, how far ahead is it? I can't wait for the next thursday dammnit...

"Every opinion that isn't mine is subjected to Your Mileage May Vary."Nope, it's an original. Apparently there will be a manga adaptation though, and there's a couple of spinoff manga in the works.
So speculations on how her wish would backfire?
My theory...with his newfound ability to move his hands again, he suddenly becomes a dick and starts using it to hit on other girls and pretend he never knew Sayaka. And for no reason at all, slap her with that hand.
