One of my problems with Japanese is that I cannot take the word "desu" seriously anymore thanks to the internet.

Isn't "desu" basically a to-be verb, or something similar and extremely important to Japanese, like "the" or "at" for English?

IIRC, desu is a sentence copula.

And is usually dropped or replaced with «da», I think, hence the Rozen Maiden chick's memetic status.

Yah, «desu» is usually dropped.

What happens at the end of the sentence varies quite a bit depending on a number of factors. "Desu" is a formal ending that can be rude to leave out depending on the situation.

I honestly think Japanese sometimes buries itself under so many different factors. Shit, the amount of crap you have to do to base words just to get a sentence is just plain crazy sometimes. Don't even get me started on the politeness thing, but that's cultural, so I can't get mad at it.

In any case, I actually like the way Japanese does that, in a similar sense to how you like the English vocabulary.

If people learned from their mistakes, there wouldn't be this thing called bad habits.

I don't think it's too bad, but I suppose growing up with it made me used to it. English seems more complicated to me.

I think the politeness thing is interesting, but will make the language harder to learn.

And can we not start comparing language difficulties again? That didn't work out very well in the last thread.

It's best to start this sort of thing young. I'm not quite sure if this something that just anyone can do either.
