Better characters? For realz? Like a female lead that's either kidnapped, poisoned, brainwashed or comatose for the majority of the game?
No serious plot flaws? Like the tremendously stupid Villain Ball FATE held at the very end?
Please tell me you're not talking about all the characters that can join your party. Most of them anyway.
You got some dirt on you. Here's some more!Chrono Trigger is one of the few JRP Gs I actually like. (Although I've recently gotten into the Persona series as well) There are a few things that set it apart from less interesting games like FF, Dragon Quest, etc. for me.
For one, the story was good. It's not incredibly deep or anything, but it's a fun adventure that doesn't take itself too seriously and has some snappy dialogue. Too many JRP Gs just have a rubbish story with bland characters.
For two, it wasn't overly long. My beef with the FF series is that the games go on for much longer than their gameplay stays interesting for. Chrono Trigger isn't really short or anything, but it doesn't dragon for hours and hours. Which brings me to my next point.
No grinding. I didn't have to do any grinding in order to make progress in Chrono Trigger, as far as I remember. Occasionaly I would run around and fight monsters just for fun, but I never felt like it was a chore I had to sit through to get to the "good parts."
And then there's the fantastic graphics and music, which are the icing on the cake. All in all, an excellent game and easily my favourite JRPG.
Unfortunately it was never actually released in my country until the recent DS remake, although I played it much earlier than that using an emulator. I do wish I'd had it for my Super Nintendo back in the day, though. It would have taken a place of honour on my shelf right next to The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Super Mario World and Super Metroid.
I still haven't beaten Cross but I must say that I am preferring it to Trigger so far.
If someone wants to accuse us of eating coconut shells, then that's their business. We know what we're doing. - Achaan ChahHey, if it blows both Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest out of the water in terms of fun and attention span loving, I'll sure as hell play it.
ALL CREATURE WILL DIE AND ALL THE THINGS WILL BE BROKEN. THAT'S THE LAW OF SAMURAI.It blows neither out of the water in those categories. Especially not Dragon Quest. Oh Dragon Quest IX...
If someone wants to accuse us of eating coconut shells, then that's their business. We know what we're doing. - Achaan ChahI found most of the characters in Trigger to be pretty bland. The (rather dated now, IMO) gameplay and music are really what kept me interested. Gimme a choice between a FF game and Chrono Trigger and I'll most certainly pick the former.
Also, the sidequests. Holy crap there were a lot of those.

Yes the sidequests were the best part of the game that wasn't the music or settings by far. I hated a few of the characters. Especially Ayla.
If someone wants to accuse us of eating coconut shells, then that's their business. We know what we're doing. - Achaan ChahI've always wanted to know why only Frog uses "thou" and all that. No one else in his era does. How did he pick that up?
Oh god, I hated Ayla. I hate Hulk Speak on principle, really.
I have no idea why he does that. Maybe he reads lots of old stories about knights? Like Don Quixote did? Did they change that in the DS version? I had heard something about changing it...

Well, shit, if you hate stupid accents for no plain reason . . . Chrono Cross has to be pure torture.
I try not to disappoint.
I don't hate all stupid accents. I just really dislike the way Ayla spoke. The other stupid accents weren't grating. Frog was amusing I thought. Certainly the best character in the game. Cross I quite like for its stupid accents. THERE ARE MANY AND IT IS GLORIOUS.

If someone wants to accuse us of eating coconut shells, then that's their business. We know what we're doing. - Achaan ChahEven without the Hulk Speak, I probably wouldn't have liked Ayla.
Yeah, you lost me there. You dislike Ayla's accent for no reason, then.
That accent just bugs me. I have no real reason beyond hulk speak bugging me and do not need another reason to dislike her accent.
If someone wants to accuse us of eating coconut shells, then that's their business. We know what we're doing. - Achaan ChahFrog's awesome :)
It Just Bugs MeSorry, but y'all just can't appreciate the glory of Ayla.
The glory of an annoying woman who I think looks ugly?
If someone wants to accuse us of eating coconut shells, then that's their business. We know what we're doing. - Achaan ChahI liked Frog too. I didn't care much for the DS remake because of the changes they made to the script.
That's fine. I'm was just puzzled why one aspect of something is criticized while the same aspect is praised in something else.
But if it's gut reaction...*shrug*...whatcha gonna d—
Oh. So you just dislike the character and thus everything about her by extension. Nevermind.

I love this game and want to have its babies.
...even though I ship Crono/Lucca.

My Tumblr. Currently liveblogging Haruhi Suzumiya and revisiting Danganronpa V3.
Trigger's a good game. One of the best on the SNES. I greatly prefer Cross though. Better characters, greater challenge, loved the storyline, I struggled to find any serious flaws when I first played played it.
Just wish the disc hadn't broken itself, I'd still be playing it right now.
