Josef: Despite Scrye's snark, it's not like the drill sergeants are there to kill you. They are very closely watched to ensure that their behavior is not stepping over the line into abuse. They have very clear guidelines about what they are and are not allowed to say and do to new recruits. People who really can't hack the physical and mental requirements are given many opportunities to exit, before they reach the end, so that people who signed up and can't handle it can get out before getting stuck for four (or more) years. The military is a career where your individuality needs to be sublimated to the requirements of the job  *

I wasn't even talking about boot camp. I was talking about the fleet.

Boot camp, if you try to quit, all the options to get out take longer than actual boot camp, meaning the quickest way out of that shithole is to graduate.

Be that as it may, its their job to knock them down when they're at their worst. Some people just can't handle it. And those are the people that can't handle combat either.

The only civilians I criticize are the ones who don't understand the military and yet try to change us to be just like the civilian world anyway. In a firefight, people who aren't disciplined get other people killed. Look back two years ago, when the USS George Washington caught fire and caused several million dollars in damage. What caused it was people ignoring the rules - in other words, lacking discipline - and the end result was a sixteen-hour fire that crippled one of our warships for close to two months.

Now, it should never be done maliciously - on that, I'll agree with you. The point is not to simply break them, but to break them and then rebuild them a certain way. Some branches are more extreme at it than others (like the Marines) but it is a vital and neccessary part of being in the armed forces. If you can't handle it, that's fine, lots of people can't, and I'm glad you recognize that in yourself and can focus on something you'd be better at.

^^I don't criticize civilians for not wanting to join. I criticize them for the same reasons as Blue Ninja. Just because they don't want to be in the military doesn't mean they still know how to run one.

^^At least you're not one of those militarists who want to force military 'values' in the civilian world. Also people who say that "disobiedent children" or "criminals" should be FORCED in the military.....or that military service, or a military is a panacea for all social ills....

And those are the people that can't handle combat either.

Well, most of the military is a long logistics tail.....oh wait that's being privatized just bugs me

The last thing we need to do is teach criminals how to be disciplined and efficient. Besides, we already have enough criminals who sign up willingly, why would we want to force more? No, the military is not a panacea, though it can be a good influence on people, even if they just serve their four years and GTFO, but I recognize that it is not for everyone.

People have recommended that in the past, and still do to a lesser extent because they think hierarchy/beatings/control is good for people instead of fucking them over.....

Much better to fuck them over than give them training.

^^

Most anyone in the US military is strongly against conscription, I don't want anybody watching my back who doesn't want to be there in the first place. I'd rather have one fireteam of volunteers than an entire squad of conscripts.

Josef: Each branch has several sources of internal affairs. For criminal actions, each branch has a criminal investigations department. The Navy/USMC has NCIS, the Air Force has OSI, and the Army has CID.

Then there's also JAG, who act as lawyers for military members who are in legal disputes between themselves and the military.

And there's the IG, you can submit anonymous or not-anonymous complaints for serious offenses, everything from sexual harassment, mismanagement of funds, to fraud, waste, and abuse. If you file a complaint with the IG, they are mandated to investigate. It's not something you do lightly though, that's what you do when there is no where else to turn to, and the consequences of letting the situation continue are pretty bad.

I think the issue is, Josef, that for those of us who got through boot camp and have been around for a while, doing what we do isn't a big deal, so we don't understand why people fail. To not sugarcoat it, we do see it as weakness not to be able to do such a simple thing. If you don't join in the first place, no harm, no foul. But for one reason or another, many of us look on it as weakness if someone can't mentally hack something as simple as boot camp, since combat is way more stressful.
