^^ I wasn't in Tokyo...and I asked a girl because she's the closest one who also looks like she can speak a language other than french...

And it still doesn't disprove the fact that police there like to pursue a lot of easy to arrest people doing trivial things that could hardly be seen as a crime. Polices are like this in many parts of the world.

Think about it this way. The police go to shutdown a store selling an 18+ book to a kid. To the storeowner, it's a ridiculous reason to shut his store down, selling a previously safe series that is now 18+ to a customer that the work is aimed at. But to the police and the public who are ignorant of such things, the police just shut down a sleazebag trying to sell porn to an innocent little kid.

In case you missed mine it's 17+ and you still need over-18 ID to buy them.

17+ is a big difference. People are allowed to advertise those games places that under-18s might see it, and they're allowed to sell those games through major retailers and shelve them with the others.

The A.O. rating does not have those advantages.

You know, there is one extreme: OMG ROCKS ARE FALLING THE ANIME/MANGA INDUSTRY IS GOING TO DIEEEEEE! Underage people won't be able to get their manga AT ALL! NOOOOO!

And then there is the other extreme: Absolutely nothing is going to happen the anime/manga industry is going to be completely unaffected and sales will just be as good as ever! Underage people are still going to buy manga no matter what! YAY!

Other than pointing that out, I'll probably remain silent until there's more information on what exactly is going on, rather than being extremely optimistic or pessimistic based on what little we have.

Ah, I will agree that legality of access and ease of access are two different things, and marketing is an important factor to consider as well. Existing manga with existing fanbases are all very well and all, but what about exposure of new series? Also consider the fact that there are many different kinds of paying customers ranging from the "I need a manga to read while waiting for the bus" crowd to hardcore merchandise collecting otaku, from rich kids to poor kids, from kids who are more mobile to those who aren't, from kids who care about being good and those who don't, and saying that all of them will be as likely to see/buy/seek out 18+ manga is rather optimistic IMHO. The blanket statement that ten-year-old children have all seen much worse things than a pair of naked breasts is extreme as well.

Well, why not? This bill could actually AID the publishers and writers, after all.

I personally think that the public is going to raise a big stink about this, and the bill won't pass.

I agree with that. This bill's not going to pass the second time, because it's freaking insane.

Didn't we already clarify why the bill passed? There was a link that pretty much explained the whole situation.

Ishihara didn't pass this bill because everyone supported it, he passed it because barely anyone knew or cared. The bill started out with the "Complete Loli Ban" which stretched too all material available, the public did raise a stink about it and the bill failed to pass. However now the bill has been revised with it's opposition critisms taken into bill and revised accordingly to be more specific, when he submitted it again the people who made a stink about it before thought it was over and didn't notice, the public had better things to worry about, and politicians had much more pressing matters to deal with. In short Ishihara isn't some evil genius and this bill isn't his doomsday device, the bill passed because he waited long enough for opponents to let their guard down.

I'd argue still not enough people, and I mean people with political and social influence, not geeks the rest of society tramples all over or children, knows or cares enough either to veto this at June.

The Prime Minister might veto it. He doesn't like the bill one bit.

That's also another event that distracted from this bill, the problems the Prime Minister is having and the problems which result from that overshadow other things easily.

You know, we honestly aren't going to change anything — including each others' opinions — by talking about it, and the conversation is starting to get just a bit circular, so maybe we're better off just waiting to see what happens in June.

Being the nominally top active politician at the country doesn't make him an Emperor whose orders have to be followed on the spot, you know. Especially when his term comes closer to its end and his rivals, including Ishihara, have gained more ground.

WORLDTree Since: Dec, 1969

[up]That's right, one of the main problems the system is dealing with right now is the severe lack of popularity on the Prime Minister's side, it makes it hard for him to pass decisions and such when he's opposed at every turn.

Just a few random comments...

Firstly, I noticed a post early on asking about drawings of children as opposed to real photos. Well, that is now supposed to be illegal in the UK, along with "child-like" and "possibly underage" being thrown into the mix. So your average two billion year old alien being could be considered perv-fodder if she looks like a catgirl in a seifuku. Let's not even get started on the wrongness of the age of consent being 16, but the age of "child" for the purposes of pornography being 18. So if two lovey-dovey legal teens score a home run and take photos of it... oh dear.

As for the Japanese bill, I think one of the most questionable aspects of it is the banning of the late night animé on the grounds of being deconstructive to the proper raising of children. Unlike, say, doing some proper bloody parenting and ensuring said child isn't watching late night telly in the first place?

And today, good old Prez Sarko wants to hijack France's G8 presidency to sort out the Internet and kick off all the paedophiles, etc. Yeah, the price of petrol has risen nearly 40% in a year, various taxes have risen 10%-30%, while minimum wage has risen around 0.5% . . . and his (lack-of-)highness wants to jump on a worn out bandwagon. What, is he not man enough to rise to the problems that are really important to the country? Or does he know he'll at least get some support for chasing invisible paedophiles, for...

...it seems as soon as somebody somewhere screams "think of the children!", all logic, sanity, and rationality goes out of the window. Certainyl, there are problems - on-line pervs and excess panty shots in animé - but to jump up and down screaming "ban it! ban it!" like a cross between a 16th century Puritan and a spoilt child is not really going to solve any problem other than the illusions in the mind of those making the most noise.

I would like to see the second series of Highschool Of The Dead with a little more zombie and a little less jiggling, but I don't want it child-safe, how can you have a decent kiddie-safe zombie action animé? It is like asking for a PG version of a Tarantino film.

Well, it's 6am here, time I considered a bit of shut-eye, eh? smile

Best wishes.
