...what the hell are you on about? After the Acts of Union in 1707 the Scottish haven't attempted to forcibly secede and an invasion from Ireland would be totally impossible.

Anyway, independence isn't a very attractive prospect in Wales or Scotland  *

, despite what the SNP and Plaid might like to think.

I'm trying to work out what exactly it is you're advocating, Balloon Fleet.

The thing is, no matter how many grumbles I hear about tuition fees (coming from a student by the way) I neve hear any solutions!

Where does the money come from then? (Even more) raised taxes? Cuts to the NHS? (You know, which already struggles to procure drugs and saves fucking lives?) Cuts to our schools instead? (Which are not in the best shape to begin with.) And cuts to the army have already been made... and people are fuming over that for good reason. (Its wrecking the economy of some towns where bases have closed.)

They talk of a graduate tax. But is being taxed for the rest of your life a big improvement over having to pay off a certain sum of money in fewer years?

Keeping Trident was total fail. We do not need Trident. It is debatable as to whether we ever needed Trident.

Anyway, Game Chainsaw, 10% cuts to the military - mishandled though they were - don't really compare to 80% cuts to universities.

@Josef Bugman: Counter-argument there is the brain-drain effect. But this seems ridiculous; frankly a lot of these high-end bankers and civil servants don't do work that justifies their sky-rocketing salaries and bonuses. They have money they don't need, even for the most luxurious of lifestyles, and there are people who genuinely need that money more. And I really don't see how these folks are indespensible. As long as you don't hit the genuine specialists you'll be fine.

And Trident is confusing. I thought those subs and their missiles were good till 2027 anyway? Why are they being spent on now? This is hardly the time for it.

@Balloon Fleet: Bravo, you figured it out. Yes, democracies mean minorities may be victimized by the majority. But really? You honestly think violence from the minority solves anything?

Except for 4/1/2011. That day lingers in my memory like...metaphor here...I should go.

^ It does when all other avenues of protest have been exhausted and rendered ineffective. Democracy or otherwise.

Unfortunately for the students in Britain, not all avenues of protest have been exhausted yet.

Even then, generally not. It's only justified if the majority is benefitting at the expense of the minority, and has no ethical reason to do so. Raising the tuition is a reasonable thing to do, and will help more people than it hurts.

Most of the time, a majority should win. If people get to choose what side they're on, (e.g. racial and economic discrimination is bad) than the majority should win. End of story.

I would generally come out in favor of Ultrayellow's position, but with various reservations. For instance, I'm gathering that certain government officials in the UK were elected based on a particular stance, and are now going against that stance. Now, obviously an official can't get everything done that he'd like to do in a great big clunky bureaucracy, but he should at least make a token effort towards sincerity. If you do the exact OPPOSITE of what you were voted into office promising to do, I would consider that reasonable grounds for dismissal from your job.

Furthermore, I think Guantanamo must be destroyed.

That's true, I think. I'm not British, so I don't know for sure. And I don't think my position is clear. I want the students to protest, but I object to the use of violence.

You said "the entire history of the british isles" so I mentioned the examples of the Irish War of Independence/'The Rising' & the Scottish Wars of Independence.

Anyway, independence isn't a very attractive prospect in Wales or Scotland *, despite what the SNP and Plaid might like to think. I'm trying to work out what exactly it is you're advocating, Balloon Fleet.

I pointed out that class system you point out isn't so permanent as you think, and that people are moving away from that hierarchy

Well, looking at Malcolm X & the Black Panthers & their mentality, yes. When all else fails, vote for the rooftops/
