When do we get another F-Zero game?

Those games rocked! GX in particular was perhaps the best racing game I've ever played. They all did so well, but we haven't gotten a new one since F-Zero GP Legend for the GBA.

What happened? Where did F-Zero go?

A lot of people expect one on the 3DS at some point. Makes sense, right?

It's assumed part of the reason we haven't gotten one in so long is because of that old Miyamoto quote about 3rd parties:

"Yes, that has definitely happened. In the past we've worked with some outside development houses on titles like F-Zero and Starfox — and let me just say that we were disappointed with the results. Consumers got very excited about the idea of those games, but the games themselves did not deliver. And, well, to be honest with you, Zelda: Twilight Princess is not doing very well at all in Japan. It is very disappointing. But it is doing okay here in America." http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20037961,00.html

Most people assume that he's talking about the GP Legend games and not GX, by the way, since that actually did pretty well.

So, most likely, we have to wait for EAD to find time for it. Funny thing though, we went 8 years between the original and X, so this isn't even the longest it's been since a new game.

I was listening to the GX soundtrack as I noticed this topic. I definitely think the 3DS is a good opportunity to break out the franchise again. I've really only played GX, to be honest, but it's been so interesting I think I might try out X in the next few weeks.

Obligatory wishlist: online would be a given, due to the (apparent) ease Mario Kart Wii had. It'd be really impressive to get 30-person races online, even if not for random matchmaking.

Tracks that really take advantage of the game's mechanics would be good. I really liked all three Green Plant stages for this reason; why not have some branching, intersecting paths (a la a gravity-skewing Yoshi's Valley) or jumps that flip you upside down? They could add some more track types, as well: since we're dealing with hovercrafts, why not have water-skimming sections in Big Blue (marked by pylons, of course).

Maybe some more customization, like the 64DD version of X's track editor or some custom character stuff. Given the Mii integration, I don't think this would be a surprise. Speaking of which, it wouldn't hurt to have a "battle mode" or something, with specialized, character-based attacks. Yeah, basically an excuse to use Falcon Punch in the series, but still, it'd be fun. But don't make anything besides the standard spin and sweep required in normal mode.

Throw in a few more references (Todd in the Zero-One? Sonic on foot?) or at least diversify the cast a bit - I wouldn't mind cutting a few, either, if necessary (as long as we keep at least some of the AX characters).

You must align the 12 stones of power when the moon runs red with blood, and then sacrifice the blood of 12 chickens. Hopefully, if you have followed the previous rituals, the gods of Nintendo will smile upon you, and give you a new F-Zero game.

Still need More Dakka, and it's about time to start a real WAAAAAGH.

[up]Hmmm...it appears that I missed that part in my book of "dark rituals for Nintendo".

Clearly I must get back to practicing and studying my evil tome of Nintendo lore.
