The New Touhou Character Alternate Interpretation Compendium!

Almost two days with no new posts. I take it we should move on?

Auuuugh, I didn't want to say anything and remind people of the existence of this thread until I could get myself to draw that picture and write something to go along with it! Grarr!

Well technically, it's just my own fault for being so slow. Though thanks to my new schedule, Wednesday and today were pretty horribly busy for me. I've got a rough sketch done, though... Agh.

Anyway, guess it's time to start collecting ideas for the next character.

I'll distract people by asking once again whether Satori is the one that dresses Okuu and Orin. If so, she has taste in clothes almost as weird as the Lunarians. I mean, we know she's a crazy cat lady but now I'm expecting that even her non-human shaped pets all have sweaters or something on.

Orin gets what is frankly a very stylish dress and Okuu gets kind of a school girl uniform. Which she wears in the reactor, so its probably made of asbestos or something.

Whenever there's a character who is tied to another character I start wondering about the clothing choice. Like if Yukari chose what Ran wears and Ran chose what Chen wears. I wonder if Eirin or Kaguya chose the bunny youkai pink dress clothing or whether its something Tewi chose. Tewi's clothing differs only in that she has the carrot pendant of leadership.

I wonder if Reisen chose to keep wearing the moon bunny uniform or whether Eirin suggested that she wear it.

I wonder if Shinki chose what the Makai population wears.

I'm fairly certain that Remilia chose the maid uniform for Sakuya because she just seems the type. But to get back on subject, do you think Satori chose what her pets wear or do you think they just sort of manifested the clothes?

I think they manifestated! But an old(?!) lady living alone sure would be the type to enjoy making some clothes. Hell, even if Okuu and Orin came fully dressed, they probably have closets full of alternate outfits, just like all the other humanoid pets that I assume are scurrying around the place.

That said, whether clothes are created by DA MAGICS or by human/youkai hands, they're probably made to suit the personality of the person wearing them. Which is, in fact, where much of my interpretation of Orin comes from.

I am now imagining a garden full of youkai cats and birds and dogs all dressed in sweaters or hats or whatever. And the thing of the thing is, Satori knows exactly whether they like it or not. So they're dressed up at least to the 8s and they're loving it. Satori has the happiest, most stylish and adorable posse of pets ever.

I think they just manifest it on themselves when they shapeshift. Otherwise, Rin managed to dress herself really fast for the boss fight.

Oh hey, I just realized that according to my guesstimation, Rin counts as a less popular character.

Yeah, she's definitely a borderline case.

I just assumed ZUN designs their clothes based on what he thinks would fit them or their themes and that's it...

And I personally think Utsuho wears a school-girl uniform because she was supposed to help modernize Gensokyo to a certain extent, so she wears a "modern" style of clothing.

I think youkai have a kind of animorph thing going on except less restrictive where they can morph clothes with them when they shapeshift.

Also, its kind of weird for Okuu to be dressed school girl to represent modernity when she's from the underground which is double isolated from the outside modern world. Its not only behind the border, its even isolated from Gensokyo's surface which is getting all these random things from the outside world. Youkai clothing magic sure is amazing.

Yeah, but in-universe explanation versus out-universe. Doylist versus Watsonian.

Really? I don't remember that in the game.

It's mentioned in one of the routes. "But, I haven't seen that pet for a while. I don't know what kind of youkai she's become"

Pretty sure Okuu has always been a youkai. A hell raven is not a run-of-the-mill raven.

Even without being pedantic, it's not for certain if she had already been humanoid before the eating thing.

I assumed it meant the same as "I don't know what kind of person she's become" in the sense that Satori doesn't know what Orin is like anymore. Like a friend that's been out of the country for a couple years, you don't know how they've changed.

I didn't think it meant that Orin/Okuu got her humaniform since being away from Satori.

Since were back on the topic, I think it's much more likely that clothing is manifested.

I'm not sure where Satori would get the materials for clothing underground.

However, no evidence is given in-universe that makes me doubt that one or the other is a possibility.

It's much easier to just say ZUN creates the outfits. Yes, it doesn't explain where the clothing comes from in-universe, but it is true.

@ Bocaj: Remilia probably picked out Sakuya's outfit. Yukari, being Yukari, may have also picked out Ran's. Since Tewi is Eirin's landlord, Eirin probably didn't pick what she wears. With Reisen it could be either way, depending on how positively it reminds Eirin of the moon.

Pretty sure Reisen's just wearing what she came with. It's the moon-rabbit uniform.

Yes, I realize. But why? Did she decide to keep wearing it out of sentimentality or nostalgia or something? Did Eirin tell her to continue wearing it?

Judging by how Reisen II: 2 Fast 2 Furious wore an earth rabbit pink dress, its not like moon rabbits compulsively need to wear the uniform. I don't know how long Reisen has been on Earth but the fact that she still wears the uniform is an interesting facet of her character.

Reisen II was intentionally trying to disguise herself as an earth rabbit. So we don't know what she would have worn in normal circumstances.

I wouldn't be surprised if Reisen simply has no other clothes at all.

But doesn't it rip? And get smelly? Not to mention that she at least has a summer and winter outfit...

She seems like the kind of person who would repair her own clothes rather than buy new ones. At least two outfits is plausible though, although her summer outfit looks like her normal outfit without the jacket to me.

Edit: Technically her summer outfit is now her normal outfit, in that she appears with it more often than otherwise in canon stuff.
