Powerful youkai or powerful people. Fairies congregate around power.
I was referencing PMISS and it said youkai because it warns about youkai so it wouldn't mention humans although it should because a powerful human can be just as dangerous.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersHell, even the Three Fairies hang around Reimu, and Cirno lives fairly near to the Mansion, which is chock full of powerful youkai and Sakuya.
Song of the SirensThis is more about Team ⑨ in general but...
“Look! The Moriya shrine is empty!” She said. “This is our chance!”
“Our chance for what?” Said another. This one sounded skeptical. “We can finally get into the shrine!” “A-Are you sure that’s a good idea?” Said another nervously.
“What are you afraid of?” Said the first. “You have the strongest on your side!” She flew out of the tree to address the rest of the group. She looked like a child, about 10 years old. She was held aloft by wings that looked like shards of ice. The fairy had short blue hair that was decorated with a green bow and she wore a blue dress.
“And what would we do once we got there?” said the skeptical one as she flew out of the tree. She had short blonde hair decorated with a bow with a red gemstone in its center. She wore a black vest an skirt and a white long sleeved shirt underneath.
“If we can even get there.” Said another. She was taller than the rest and looked like a boy at first. She had short green hair out of which stuck two antennas. She wore a white shirt, blue pants and a cape.
“And what if Sanae comes back while were there?” Said another. She was a fairy like the first girl. She had green hair which was done in a side pony tail and she wore a green and blue dress. Her wings had more of an insect like appearance. Her eyes were wide with fear.
“Let’s at least let Cirno explain her plan.” Said a fifth. Her voice was melodious. She had pink hair and wore a brown dress and hat. She didn’t wear shoes like the others. Instead, her feet were bird talons and her hands had very long and sharp nails. She had bird wings on her back.
“They probably have all sorts of cool outside world stuff up there!” Cirno said. “And I heard Sanae saying something about a terrorvision or something.”
“A terrorvision?!” The other fairy began to shake.
“Don’t be afraid Daiyousei!” Said Cirno. “I said before, I’m the strongest! Nothing will defeat me!”
“What’s a terrorvision?” Asked Wriggle
“I don’t know, Wriggle. Sounds like some sort of monster.” Answered Rumia.
The bird girl spoke up. “I think I saw one once. It’s this giant slimy thing, with spikes and eyes all over. It’s got big horns and ten mouths, with teeth as big as trees! It comes out of the dark and…” Mystia told her story, it was made up at first but she elaborated until she swore she had seen it herself. All the others eyes widened as Mystia described the deadly “terrorvision”, a wormlike monster more fearsome and deadly then the legendary Daidarabotchi and the destructive Taisui Xingjun put together. She went on to describe how Kanako had engaged in a four day battle with the monster and had in the end only managed to seal it away. And now the seal was broken…
“And you think we can stand up to something like that?!” Daiyousei said.
Even Cirno looked daunted, but not for long. The trademark cocky grin appeared on her face. She placed her hand on Daiyousei’s shoulder and said. “Don’t worry. It’ll be a piece of cake!”
She then shouted to everyone. “I ain’t afraid of nothing! I am Cirno, the strongest to have ever lived! We can kick this things ass easy!”
“I’m not sure going up against that thing is a good idea…” Wriggle commented.
“What if it eats us?!” Rumia said.
The others were starting to look discouraged. Cirno had to act fast. “Think of how famous we’ll be if we win against the terrorvision. We’d be stronger than the gods! Everyone would have to respect us! Think of all the rewards we’d get!”
The fearful expressions on everyones faces began to change to eagerness. “So guys! Are we ready?!”
“YEAH!”
And so the five of them took off towards the mountain, their thoughts filled with the prestige and prizes they would receive for slaying the dreaded Terrorvision.
Doing nothing is a choice.... It took me until the very last line to realize what the "terrorvision" actually was. *facepalm*
Lunate Elf is probably one of my favorite stage themes
That awkward moment where Kyoro is one of Satan's Generals. What Winter Left Behind
Many, many years before the Long Winter of Perfect Cherry Blossom fame, there was another winter. It wasn't the longest winter in Gensokyo, that dubious achievement still belongs to the Long Winter. But it was the harshest, coldest, strongest, and most violent winter that Gensokyo had seen in quite a long time. Even the long-lived tengu had trouble remembering a winter this bad. Travel out of the village was restricted by the large amounts of snow that piled up. Youkai curled up in whatever hidey holes they had and waited. The yuki-onna were especially active, claiming a number of humans brave or foolish enough to wander the snowstorms.
The winter spirit Letty Whiterock flew around, enjoying the winter and bringing even further chill where she went. She visited the Misty Lake and left it iced up and moved along on her winter wonderland tour of Gensokyo. Eventually, the winter ended and the lake thawed but winter left something behind.
An ice fairy was spotted by the lake. But her attitude and power was not suited to the small ice bergs that would float around the lake during winter nor to the snow that would pile up on the banks or the icicles that would form on the trees. Fairies stem from nature and are nurtured by it but the ice fairy came from a nature that was ephemeral. A winter that only briefly reminded mankind that ice used to rule the world.
And then my migraine told me that I had written enough.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersMore Daiyousei thoughts: having her as a fairy authority figure could still work at well for her also being Cirno's BFF. In Cirno, Daiyousei has a friend that's outside of the traditional fairy power structure, someone she doesn't have to lead, just hang out with. She can stop being the Great Fairy and start being Dai, goof off, have fun. She can relax and be an accomplice to someone else's adventures rather than being Fairy Judge Judy.
Cirno gets a friend she can relate to better than the flighty fairy mooks that are little more than flying power-ups, and potentially a source of wise counsel if the Strongest is feeling out of her depth. To say nothing about a source of hugs in case Cirno's status as a mutant fairy gets her down. 'cause she's kind of between worlds, isn't she? More than a fairy, less than a youkai? Might need a few hugs from time to time.
'course there's other Gensokyans who Cirno is frequently depicted with...
Suwako. An elder goddess at least 2300 years old, someone several tiers above Cirno in terms of might and mind, the quiet power behind the Moriya Shrine. But Suwako likes frogs, has a frog-themed hat, and Cirno freezes frogs, so fans have decided they're rivals. Again, this is patently absurd.
But I can see it happening. Maybe Suwako heard about that one ice fairy's hobby of putting amphibians in cryostasis, or maybe she was just bumming around the Misty Lake one day and bumped into Cirno. Suwako gives a lecture about frog rights, or Cirno picks a fight with the newcomer. Instead of just one-shotting Cirno, Suwako decides to play along for a minor duel, and ends up enjoying the experience. She could easily find herself liking Cirno for the same reasons we do. So Suwako comes by from time to time to play the cackling supervillain to Cirno's hot-blooded shonen hero, sort a like the inverse of a youth group visiting an old folks' home.
Cirno + Suwako picdumping with NSFW reminder for any newbies time happening now:
- Hisoutensoku
- Emphasizing "Tomboyish"
- Downtime with Nitori
- "Is it-" "NO"
- Some sort of food fight
- Delicious frogcicle
- Another minor meme I don't understand
- Sometimes Cirno fails to clear all the midbosses before getting to Suwako
- Foe Y- never mind
- Hugs
- More hugs
- Moeblobs in hot pursuit
Another pairing I've mentioned in the past is Cirno and Hong Meiling. Easy to imagine them running into each other since they're neighbors, and Meiling's the friendly type to put up with an inquisitive ice fairy hanging around. Cirno's someone for her to talk to while standing in front of the gate, someone who'll be impressed with martial arts and tales of Meiling's homeland. Cirno, of course, gets kung fu moves out of the relationship.
There... actually haven't been too many new pieces with Cirno and Meiling, so Copy/Paste Old (NSFW As Usual) Picdump No Jutsu! (I'm sorry, I've been watching a lot of Naruto The Abridged Comedy Fandub Spoof Series Show lately)
- Something about it made me burst out laughing
- Braiding
- Junior gatekeeper
- Meiling's perfect gym class
- Confusing the gatekeeper for playground equipment
- Cirno pretends she can fly despite being able to fly
- Sucking in your gut won't enhance your burst, Cirno
- The result
- Two underdogs who will never give up
- Flandre joins in
- What would happen if Flandre joined Team 9?
- Hooray for traditional media
- Wa-hey, something new!
Fawriel pitched Cirno and Flandre earlier, and I can see how it'd work (Remi invites Cirno to the basement to see what happens). I'd imagine a pecking order would have to be worked out pretty quickly - either Cirno will realize that she might not be as The Strongest as she usually is, or else Flandre just accepts Cirno's claims and plays Hyperpowerful Sidekick to Cirno's adventures. In any case, Flandre gets a much-needed playmate to cause some chaos in the mansion with, or to help her dodge Meiling and Sakuya if she and Cirno make a break for the great outdoors. And Cirno... gets an important lesson in humility?
There was more Flan/Cirno pieces than I expected. NSFW (again) picdump:
- Good sketch
- Cartoony style
- Cirno's probably more world-wise than the 495-year-old basement dweller
- Cirno playing the sidekick
- Throw in Meiling and Rumia for no extra charge
- Arrives for her playdate
- Not approved playtime activity
- Dress-up
- Hug
- Initiation, flattery
- Air conditioner and extra night light
- This is not what I meant by Flan/Cirno
- Can't plug gensoukoumuten enough
- Maybe they can both be The Strongest
And finally there's Letty and Cirno. I'm pretty sure this came up during the Letty conversation, and it's getting late, so I'll cut to the picdump (which may in fact be bigger than the Letty picdump. And is still NSFW)
- Glomp
- Still adorable
- The only one the Strongest will fangirl over
- Reading
- Letty's kind of messed up, but a good Cirno
- Wintery exploration
- When you see it
- Winter warriors
- Summer sucks
- Motherly smooch
- She doesn't need the clothes, Letty just enjoys knitting
- Rings
- Something about the outfit and expression
- Confidence because her power's at its height
- Aftermath
- The rare full-sized Lily White
- No, it's still winter, see the snowman?
- It was a pretty flower Cirno, thank you
- Until next year
- Still hilarious
Be weird if Cirno were older than Letty. Like Cirno was some kind of primeval, ancient fairy, barely changed after countless centuries, while Letty became her winter ghost thingy self-ness only a hundred odd years ago. And Cirno has vague memories of a "newborn" Letty, or even pre-ghost Letty. But she pushes them aside because they're confusing and LETTY'S HERE YAAAAAAY!!!
Current earworm: "Time of Death"Actually, Suwako is completely unbothered by Cirno's antics, stating that frogs freezing in the cold is perfectly natural, and it would be absurd to go against that, once again proving that ZUN has no problem treading all over the fandom.
I can see the two of them hanging out, though.

Song of the SirensI always find this odd. It's like ZUN knows exactly how to retroactively turn half the fanbase into trolls or babbling idiots.

I sure said that! You're playing with some powerful images there, with the word "ephemeral" and a reference to the ice age. What does the ephemerality have to do with it, though? It also threw me off for a moment that you drew the connection to the ice age, but then I realized it's basically a reminder that ice is really damn powerful...
Well! I do like the idea. Ice is powerful. And it makes sense both by making Cirno a freak case* , and in explaining why an ice fairy is the fairy of a plain old unfrozen lake...
I like it!
Hmmm.
We really have an easier time talking about unpopular characters, don't we? Guess most people here are the type to make up their own stuff rather than to discuss what's there.
Oh!
Raocow vs. Cirno
edited 14th Sep '11 2:43:15 AM by Fawriel
And we mostly just fill in holes when we make stuff up.
Even if some of the cast is made of Swiss cheese.
I sure said that!Sorry I've gone quiet. I just haven't really found much ideas. I'm going to ramble for a bit, so yeah.
Daiyousei.
Her stylish wings do not make her as stylish as Iku or Renko
I do prefer the "shy, emotional, but sensible" interpretation, as noncanon as it now is, if only because of how well it works with the "hot blooded, hammy, emotional in a different way" Cirno. In terms of "fairy rank", Dai (or at least, my interpretation of Dai) would be a high ranking fairy due to her power, but her demeanor just isn't set out for it, and she prefers just to be either "one of the girls" or Cirno's sidekick. And every (self proclaimed) hero type person needs a sidekick, yes?
I am still seeing steel fairy btw. Not sure what this implies though.
That went nowhere. Sorry.
Don't PM me. We don't like being PMed.People say steel fairy because she throws kunai but kunai are a relatively common danmaku type in EOSD if I recall. Even Meiling gets in on it and yet fandom makes the only knives she gets be the ones that end up in her head. Isn't it sad? So, I think it would make more sense for Dai to be a wind or water fairy. She is the fairy of a lake. Or a flower fairy if the FW bouquet wasn't for romance.
Yeah. In my interpretation, Cirno was birthed by a brief moment in time, a freak winter that won't happen again for a long time. Weather patterns, how do they work?
Its why she's always dissatisfied with life. She can't go around painting frost on windows or whatever the hell it is that other ice fairies do. Its why she has to prove she's the strongest. Its why she strays from a lake that she doesn't feel is her home, not quite. Its why even in winter, she's restless. Something is not quite right.*
Thanks for commenting.
Forever liveblogging the Avengers... That aside, I'm really liking that! I might have to head-canonize it!
Actually, I say steel fairy mostly because of her wings. They always seemed kinda metal looking to me. (the same way ice fairy Cirno has ice wings) The kunai are just a bonus I guess.
YEEEEAH!!

Don't PM me. We don't like being PMed.The only thing that even approaches the stylish levels of Iku and Renko is Koishi's hat.
It has hattitude.

Song of the SirensIs it safe to assume that there's not going to be a whole lot more happening in this discussion?
I have another write-up planned. But to stimulate discussion in the meantime, I would like to propose that not only is Cirno a blithering idiot, she's also fat and has made no meaningful contribution to Touhou at all. Also also, she's definitely not cute or entertaining.
Its almost as if its opposite day.

Forever liveblogging the AvengersAre you sure you're not thinking of Reimu?
Reimu is the immortal girl, right? The red-white?
Forever liveblogging the AvengersNo, she's the shrine maiden. With the black-and-white dress and enormous hat.
Cirno has done more for Touhou than Nameless Midboss Fairy (not Daiyousei, the other one). Cirno at least has a personality and is amusing. Namless Midboss Fairy who is not Daiyousei just gets in the way.
And Cirno is not fat!
I got nothing. Sorry.
