Whenever I play Deus Ex the only way you can possibly play it, I always use the Sniper Rile and have the Pistol on reserve if I need to blow up TNT.

The fully upgraded Pistol in Human Revolution is godly, though.

Got the Helios Ending in Deus Ex. I figured out what happened the last time I went for it, i.e. I disabled all the four Blue Fusion reactors in Bob Page's compound, as well as doing the stuff for the Helios one at the same time. Which made it much more difficult because I had to shut down all those UCS things as well so all the monsters they made didn't bite my legs off.

This time I just engaged the white band and ultra band thingies, opened the Primary Router, and buggered off upstairs to merge with Helios.

New post, because I've started a new run through in Deus Ex. And I've ran into something really weird. Got through the hostage situation in Battery Park's Metro Station, and with the nifty use of Gas Grenades and Riot Prod charges, I took down all the H Ts alive, saving the hostages. I get to Hell's Kitchen and Paul has the cheek to use the dialogue that would have gone with the "me taking the lethal option and killing errything" choice.

Bastard. In less than a minute and a half on site I take down nearly a dozen bad guys, save two hostages and all this without firing a shot in anger, and that's the thanks I get.

I love how you can use TNT and LAMs to kill every enemy as soon as they spawn during that sequence where you rescue Paul. It's such an epic abuse of meta knowledge and it's so great. Same goes for killing Anna as soon as possible.

That's probably why the original is so damn good. There's so much crazy shit that you can do if you really know the game.

Some pages that have deep, and I mean DEEP background on the story behind Deus Ex, and lots of other good stuff besides:

You can also play The Nameless Mod. There's a fan fiction "store" in that game and the owner of it exists solely to tell you absolutely everything about Deus Ex and there's some really interesting stuff there.

Speaking of mods, has anyone played the Shifter mod? Looks really interesting to me.

I actually have downloaded that thing, but I'm not yet ready to mess around with it.

Deus Ex Human Revolution: Director's Cut.

It's cheaper than the main game on PSN, so... I'm thinking that means it's basically "DLC" and adds to the framework of the full game. However, the description calls it a "game", and the tab that tells you whether it's an "add-on" or a full digital copy is missing. Further research described it as an "update" to Deus Ex HR, but no one's been clear about it's actual state.

Is Director's Cut a "visual mod" that updates things (explaining why it's so much cheaper), or is it a "bundle" that combines the main game and the DLC? Because that's a ridiculous sell price if that's the case. DLC, plus a graphics update, plus the main game rolled together and sold cheaper than if you bought and downloaded the original?

Doesn't make sense to me.

EDIT: The page cleared. It's saying "Full Game". Director's Cut, the Full Game, is being sold for digital download for less than the main game.

What the f'ck?

No clue what's up with the PSN's pricing, but Director's Cut features all of the DLC and integrates the Missing Link DLC (originally a separate campaign) into the main storyline. It also revamps the boss battles to reduce their Fake Difficulty and adds a dev commentary mode (which is full of spoilers).

I've also heard that the Director's Cut actually makes a full Pacifist Run possible but no one's told me how to subdue bosses.

The bosses still all die at Jenson's hand in cutscenes. Their deaths don't break a Pacifist Run. It works exactly the same as in the original version.

I didn't bother trying. None of the Tyrants are worthy of survival. So I still kill them regardless.

So they still die but the game just doesn't count them? That's... rather stupid since you could go through the entire original game without killing anyone whether in a cutscene or in game (I'm pretty sure there's a way to bypass having to kill Agent Navarre in order to escape UNATCO but I can't remember how).

I'm pretty sure that the original Deus Ex assumes that you kill Anna and Gunther, especially since, to the best of my knowledge, the only way to avoid killing them is through glitches. Human Revolution's boss battles have many, many flaws, but they share that one with the original.

I can't remember how to deal with Navarre but I'm pretty sure you can just run away from Gunther.

Gunther can be fled from, as can Walton Simons both times - Navarre is the only mandatory boss. Howard Strong needs to die too, but he can easily be tricked into killing himself with his own LAM so you don't need to do it. You can also tranq him, but after mission 3 that counts as killing, gameplay-wise. Bob Page dies in all endings, but he's The Unfought and only one ending is deliberately focussed around killing him, so again, probably doesn't count.

Navarre does need to be fought, but you can glitch your way out of the building without doing so. Weirdly, there's dialogue in the game based around not having killed her, suggesting the option to not kill her did exist but was removed. That, or the devs were aware of and decided not to fix the glitch for some reason.

[up][up]

If it is, they're selling the Director's Cut for under $10 while the main game is 20-ish.

I did a little more reading and I think there was some kind of scandal involving the distribution of DLC for the PC and console versions. I'm not sure, but maybe that's why - it's sort of a "we're sorry" sort of deal.

I just do a mook pacifist run in the original Deus Ex. Bosses and animals don't count.

[up][up][up] You say that after the third mission tranquiliser darts count as "killing"; how does that manifest? I've just completed a pacifist run (more or less: as I recall, I did kill Navarre, Simons and Hermann, as well as a fair few animals and at least one unlucky soldier, I think; robots just got blasted by my GEP gun), relying on a combination of tranquiliser darts, stun-prod and baton. I don't recall any indications that I was seen as a killer, but I'm now wondering whether I either missed something or am forgetting something...

On a side-note, I found it really annoying that the stun-prod, ammunition for which seemed in terribly short supply, was, as far as I found, the only terribly reliable way of bringing down MJ 12 commandos without killing them...

[up]It's just that for the first couple of missions, dialogue and mission rewards change based on whether you incapacitate people lethally or non-lethally. Thereafter, no one cares. And when an objective says to kill someone, you complete it if they're dead or unconscious.

This theoretically creates plotholes in that the victim could just get back up a few hours later when you're gone and keep doing the things you were supposed to kill them to stop them doing. Such examples include Greene, Howard Strong, Maggie Chow, and basically any other named non-aug adversary you're supposed to take out.

Aah, fair enough; that does make sense. Come to that, it's perhaps a bit of a pity that they didn't implement such reactivity in later parts of the game—although I imagine that doing so would likely have noticeably increased the development costs (or incurred reduce attention to other parts of the game)... :/

So right now, Deus Ex: The Fall and Deus Ex: Invisible War are 80% off. I've heard mostly bad things about both of them, but they're both so cheap and I really enjoy the other Deus Ex games. Does anyone think they're worth it at 80% off?
