Eh, we knew he couldn't do much on his own, but again, he gave Gohan an opening to make a move, so it's not like he was totally worthless.

...what is up with the gore in this comic?

Salagir's always had a thing for increasing the gore found in the original manga. It's quite distracting.

Yeah, I mean, in the manga Gohan was tearing the Cell Jrs. to pieces, they weren't exploding like they were in the anime.

Evil Vegeta spent the better part of the Raichi fight specifically making heads explode. Frieza did the same with Burter I think. The one time we saw Frieza do this he just straight-blew Krillin to smithereens, he didn't specifically blow up his head. I'd expect Frieza to shoot a Death Beam through a guy in frustration before blowing him up. And I don't think Vegeta ever did anything like that.

We got a close-up of a Cell Jr getting a laser through the brain from Gast. The Cell special ended with Krillin dying in vacuum. Cell dismembered a Cell Junior prior to creating the one that fought Gast and we had a nice close-up of how badly this thing got ripped apart when it died, Cell plain did not give a fuck. Hirudegarn stabbed its tail out of his chest and exploded out of him, and Cell responded by tearing his way out and bisecting Hirudegarn, as well as Tapion.

Correct me if I'm wrong but there seemed to be fewer, less prominent displays of gore in the series.

The specials are just as gory. One had Krillen slash Vegeta through his skull to kill him after the Saiyan Saga, for example.

It did, but it also spaced things out waaaaaay more considering it had 42 volumes compared to 20-something chapters of this

Salagir seems to desperately, desperately want to be seen as Dragon Ball but cooler and way more betterer. Hence murdering of Pan and other sniping at GT jokes, for instance. And there'll probably be more Super jokes outside of that "everything is Beerus's fault" minicomic.

To be fair, he's not the first one to voice that criticism. I think some of his criticisms can be little more than jabs, but it's probably not related to trying to make DB more 'cool'.
