Not nearly as obvious as Randall ripping off SMBC (I would just love to tell you how you're wrong if you deny it), but a War Games reference only 5 days apart? COME ON. And yes, Randall does read DC so don't try that weak excuse. ___

Also, there is a difference between "Hatedoms" and all that "It's popular now it sucks" crap I saw linked and simply not liking how low-brow xkcd has become. (Is funny because dismissing someone is just much easier than admitting a sharp decline in quality.)

Lyanna, I'm going to single you out here. My post was on June 17 and that blog update was on June 18. Wouldn't matter even if I did rip them becuase that doesn't make Randall's plagiarism go away and I am certainly not profitting off this commentary.

Mr. Lostman, that's rubbish. There are hundreds of Dinosaur Comics strips, and that one is even less like the xkcd strip than the Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal one was.

I am not in denial. I realise they're similar. I also honestly think they're quite different, and I also think that it's inevitable that sometimes two different authors will have the same idea, without one plagiarising the other.

You know what? Maybe it is a ripoff. Maybe Randall Munroe is an unoriginal hack. I don't care. I don't read Dinosaur Comics and I do read XKCD. It's free and reading it costs only a minute of my time. It's not a big deal.

Oh, I didn't mean just the most recent post, I meant the complaint about the dialogue, the complaint about the nature of the Voynich manuscript, and whatever you said about the uterus one. And even if your post was before the actual blog entry, there's always this comment.

Now, I know there is a huge difference between ripping off jokes in a for-profit webcomic and repeating an argument you read that you happen to agree with. Hell, some of those points have merit (I agree about the dialogue). But it is still full of delicious, delicious irony.

"[a] vitriolic and bitter collection of unwarranted nastiness about a silly and harmless comic."

Huh. Is this header supposed to be ironic or something? I'm honestly confused.

It's probably a(n accurate) description of the blog by a disgruntled commenter which they found amusing and decided to adopt in an ironic, "I don't care what you say about me" fashion.

It's what I'd do.

I wish that people would get a "Let's see you do better" comment and then actually do better, rather then wasting their time with a logical, well-written condemnation of a stick-figure comic.

To me, it says "I don't care about xkcd as much as I do getting attention by botching about it, since it invokes NERD RAGE and NERD RAGE is profitable."

In other words: It's a trap, don't feed the troll, etc.

I don't necessarily agree with the criticism here, but "let's see you do better" is almost always bankrupt. You don't have to be a five-star chef to be a worthwhile food critic.

I know, but it would be nice if it actually resulted in something better. Whoever writes the blog is obviously already putting in a lot of effort, and I just think they could redirect it into something more constructive.

Although if I actually suggested this to him he'd probably rebuff me.

I read both the XKCD and Dinosaur Comic in question, and I didn't notice any similarity until pointed out.

I would hardly call it a ripoff in any manner- though I won't rule out inspiration.

But honestly, the only common factor was a WOPR reference. The setups (the bulk of the work) were completely different. It's like saying he's ripping off Penny Arcade because he made a video game reference somewhere.

...That Dinosaur Comics strip had only ONE thing in common with this xkcd, and that is the "Only one winning move" situation. They even approached said situation differently.

Wait, people are accusing XKCD of ripping of Dinosaur Comics because they both referenced War Games in the same week?

I like today's comic. I'm sure I'm not the only geek who zones out during the useless babble at social gatherings.

Aww. I'm not sure how that comic could get any nerdier or more antisocial, but I liked the irony.

Yeah. It was the alt text that really pissed me off; I've done exactly the same thing before, years ago (talk judgmentally about people who weren't there) and it bit me in the ass eventually.

I didn't read the alt text. Hmm.

I'm kinda ambivalent about this one. It was kinda amusing, but it also screams "basement dwelling sociopath" to me. Maybe Randall just needs a hug.

Aren't we sitting around here talking badly about a person we don't know writing a comic about people talking badly about people they don't know? Does that irony break the universe or something?
