No 40K thread yet? I'm surprised. Nay, shocked, shocked I say to discover there's gambling going on in this establishment...
I'm eagerly anticipating the imminent 5th Edition release, personally, but I was interested to know if anyone here plays and has a differing opinion on it. There are certainly plenty of people out there who seem to think that 40K 4th edition "only just" came out and that a new edition isn't needed. Anyone?
Warhammer Fantasy (including Age of Sigmar and WFRP) has its own thread here.

Yes, I'm fully aware of that.
That is the face of a man who just ate a kitten. Raw.- Drukhari, T'au & Necrons the next three Codices.
- New Knight (Good timing as I had recently been considering a full Knight army)
- New Necron character

Knowledge is Power, Guard it WellUnless they confirmed that that's a new character I think it's just a new Cryptek model.
I need a new sig.I think so too but I was quoting from the Warhammer Community page I linked to
Ooooh, maybe a new named Overlord? Perhaps the Silent King himself? Oh fuck.... what if it's a C'tan?
advancing the front into TV TropesIts the Cryptek in the video. The question is whether it is a named one or a generic one.
Knowledge is Power, Guard it WellI wouldn't mind that being the standard cryptek. The current model lacks a certain je ne sais quoi.

I need a new sig.I have doubts any Xenos character will ever be allowed to be on the Primarchs' tier. Well, the Swarmlord can 1v1 Guilliman with the right application of psychic powers, but that's about it.
Dopants: He meant what he said and he said what he meant, a Ninety is faithful 100%.Oh jeez, a Primarch-level Tyranid. That's something I don't wanna think about.
That is the face of a man who just ate a kitten. Raw.there's probably one on Octarvius slugging it out with a Beast tier Ork....
advancing the front into TV TropesPlus the Swarmlord is the equivalent and possibly the better of Marneus Calgar. All the Hive Mind has to do is beef it up by several hundred orders of magnitude to make it a match for him.
That is the face of a man who just ate a kitten. Raw.the Swarmlord ate Papa Smurf's limbs and the entire 1st Company, it's better than Calgar
advancing the front into TV TropesWould that actually happen gameplay wise? How would Calgar stack up against the Swarmlord on the tabletop?
Disgusted, but not surprisedThe thing is me is that I'm not particularly interested in what a super-swarmlord looks like or what it's capable of on the tabletop. It doesn't have the same significance as a Primarch. I don't think the 'nids have anything that can be as interesting as any son of the Emperor.
Yynead is a good new "End Times" addition that matches them. I don't actually know what the Beast is; I thought that was a rarely used term for orks as a whole.
Does any other faction have a similar long-awaited oomph unit/character ?
"But don't give up hope. Everyone is cured sooner or later. In the end we shall shoot you." - O'Brien, 1984he gets nommed, Swarmlord is tankier, hits harder, and is a Psyker that can cast 2 power per turn (Catalyst and Smite, if you use any others you're doing it wrong) to boot
advancing the front into TV TropesBeasts are basically the culmination of Orky biology. They are the perfect living weapons the Old Ones wanted. Orks get bigger, stronger, and smarter the longer they live and the more they fight. A Beast is what an Ork becomes when they live long enough and fight hard enough.
Imagine an Ork that is every bit as powerful and intelligent a commander as a Primarch. Now imagine said Ork can inspire the Orks around him to be even more intelligent and stronger, to the point that they have Ork diplomats who can speak fluent High Gothic. Oh, and said Ork can tap into all of the hardwired engineering knowledge the Old Ones programmed into their race to create fearsome technology surpassing even the Eldars' that taps directly into the psychic WAAAAGH! energy field.
That is a Beast.
And Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka is well on his way to becoming one.
8th Edition seems to have been pretty good to Swarmy.
Papa Smurf otoh remains a discount Roboute.

I need a new sig.Yeah, the War in Heaven was some seriously messed up stuff. It's little wonder that the fallout of that war warped the Realm of Souls into the Warp.
Disgusted, but not surprised@Rotpar: Put it this way-the first time the Imperium encountered a Beast, they thought it was a statue/effigy of the Ork gods. When it started moving, they thought it was a new kind of Stompa, maybe some variant of a Digga Stompa. Then they finally got a good bead on it, and realized it was a single Ork in batte plate. We see fight Vulkan one on one and holds his own until the Imperials put a plan into effect. Keep in mind that Vulkan was the physically strongest of the Primarchs, and the toughest after Mortarion.
Sorry for the word salad, cannot type today.

The Swarmlord is very much above Calgar's pay grade on the tabletop. As in, if he goes first he can 1v3 Calgar, Dante and Abaddon on average rolls. Which makes it kinda bullshit that IIRC Calgar won the rematch once he went all cyborg and Dante killed it in Devastation of Baal.
Anyway, there's plenty of fluff-precedent for Xenos rivaling Primarchs, yeah, but I very much doubt that it'll happen on the tabletop. There's this weird effect that most of the strongest special characters were made to be on the big Chapter Masters' tier, so when Primarchs came in being one step ahead everyone else kinda got left in the dust.
And again, Ghazghkull is on the verge of becoming a Beast.

Disgusted, but not surprisedWith that in mind, it's kind of a bummer that the Yncarne and the Avatar of Khaine are so comparatively meh next to the Primarchs. For something that is basically the biggest cosmological event since the Horus Heresy or even further back, the half-birth of Ynnead has had like zero importance so far.
Dopants: He meant what he said and he said what he meant, a Ninety is faithful 100%.
Yeah, about that....
