If you still want a Laybryinth reference, you could consider "David Didymus"

Well, the reason I mentioned a problem with the name "David" is because it's a Jewish name, or at least would be in medieval times. And in those times, Jews weren't very welcome in society.

Okay, naming him David and his dad Jareth is probably enough for a Labyrinth reference. He's friendly and skilled in combat, but arrogant. I know that's not the most original idea, but I'm still in the planning stages and would like to have something soon. Is there anything that might help express these traits?

[up] Jews do not exist in this universe. It's decidedly not our own.

Which is a major blow against capitalism. The system collapses if people start saving their money. It relies on people mindlessly consuming.

That just isn't true at all.

Socialism is really no better than Capitalism in this respect. The difference is that resources are spread equally, not that less are used.

Neither system works 100% as described in a world of finite resources.

It's a quote from Karl Marx.

I mean, yes, it's hosted on tumblr.

I suppose if it's that big a deal I could have quoted it directly, or posted a link to wikipedia or blogspot or wherever.

I mean, I still don't understand why you reacted "ugh, tumblr" that one time you got mad when I linked to blogspot a bunch of times.

I think that was kinda weird.

I'm not sure I understand a lot about the internet, but I'm pretty sure that "blogspot.com" and "tumblr.com" are different things.

I also don't understand why the word "tumblr" apparently counts as valid critique now. It's a social media site. Not the Daily Mail.

Got the new DWM today. Someone asked Moffat which of the Doctor's incarnations did he think he liked being the most. Moffat proceeded to pretty much fill the entire second half of the column with his thoughts.

Doctor No 1. I don't think he was very happy in his first incarnation. Like any nervous young man, he was desperately trying to seem older and more important. Snapping at people and clutching at his lapels, and pretending to know things he didn't.
Doctor No 2. How would we know? What a poker player this Doctor would have made. Al that clowning, but oh that dark frown. Now, I'm just guessing, someone who play acts so much - do they like themselves? You don't hide what you're proud of!
Doctor No 3. Oh, all the extra height. And look at how he dressed. Well, just try and miss it. His previous selves were much more unassuming - this is a Doctor who craves being the center of attention. I'd say this guy likes himself just fine.
Doctor No 4. You know what? I think he smiles too much. He moves too fast and his eyes are too wide. And when that famous grin leaves his face, it's like winter in a moment. This Doctor is the angry old man of the universe, trying to kid you he's just a clown in a funny scarf.
Doctor No 5. He's getting on a bit now, so he does what all ageing fools do - he's trying to look younger. Oh, but the anguish in the eyes. The pained innocence, the reckless bluster. Not happy, no, but if he just runs fast enough maybe he'll hit that sweet spot.
Doctor No 6. And here's the mood swing, from the gentle cricketer. This Doctor loves himself - he can't wait for you to meet him. He's happy because an egomaniac is always in the company of their favorite person.
Doctor No 7. And the mood swings again. It's a dirty universe, and someone's got to get dirty saving it. He may play the spoons but there's a cold gaze fixed on you while he does. I think this Doctor would frown and look puzzled if you'd asked him if he was happy. "What's that got to do with anything?" he'd ask. And then he'd break into a gap-toothed grin and spin his brolly till he made you laugh.
Doctor No 8. And relax. Young, swaggering, great looking and knows it. We saw so little of him but he's got a time machine and there's plenty of the universe left to see. A gentleman, a scholar, an adventurer, an optimist - and yes, in the main. happy, I think. So what could possibly go wrong?
The War Doctor. Not happy. Not for one single moment, an incarnate rejection of everything the Doctor stood for. The Doctor who doesn't get a number because he doesn't deserve the name.
Doctor No 9. Oh, that wild grin. The one that tries too hard. There are moments when this Doctor looks so solemn, so dark and haunted, you just long for him to have a happy moment. And then he smiles, and you know just how bad it is. The high plains drifter Doctor, who needs nothing from anyone - and everything from Rose Tyler.
Doctor No 10. Well, he certainly starts happy and why shouldn't he? He's young and cool and sexy, with great hair. And like a happy fool, he goes and breaks the most basic of rules -he falls in love with the girl in the box with him. And he knows that can't ever work, because she'll age and he'll regenerate but he allows himself to think, maybe, just maybe... And then, of course, she goes off with his human clone and he realises his most successful relationship doesn't involve him. How happy would that make anyone?
Doctor No 11. you know, this is maybe too soon for me to judge. It seems like hardly yesterday there was a gorgeous flail of quiff and bow tie and about seven elbows - but now the Eleventh Doctor has gone forever. Was he happy before he went? I always thought he was brilliant at finding happiness in the moment - in every fleeting moment, as it spun fast. I think if he was trapped in a burning spaceship, and surrounded by killer slugs from the ninth dimension, he'd take pleasure in finding a fez. But wouldn't we all?
Doctor No 12. Oh I think you'll have to wait and see. And you might be surprised...

I just re-read all that. I didn't agree with any of my answers but blimey I enjoyed that question. Give it a go yourself!

I surprisingly like a lot of that, I just wish Ten's section wasn't all about Rose. He's got plenty of other flaws and miseries that don't involve her, or is that just wishful thinking?

I don't think he was very happy in his first incarnation. Like any nervous young man, he was desperately trying to seem older and more important. Snapping at people and clutching at his lapels, and pretending to know things he didn't.

Except that time he started giggling when he and the anarchist from the future burned down Rome. That was probably fun.

And he seemed to actually like Cameca.

So what could possibly go wrong?

Going off the EDAs, the comics, Big Finish and Night Of The Doctor: Everything.

Not happy. Not for one single moment,

I mean, a bit towards the end. "Bad wolf girl I could kiss you" and all.

He's got plenty of other flaws and miseries that don't involve her, or is that just wishful thinking?

I mean. The Rose thing is sorta kinda something he can feel a little upset about without coming across as a bigger jerk.

Because of the irony, if nothing else.

It's distinct from him feeling bad about Martha and Donna, who Ten kinda wronged.

I always thought he was brilliant at finding happiness in the moment - in every fleeting moment, as it spun fast.

MADGE: "Lily and Cyril's father, my husband, is dead and they don't know yet, because if I tell them now, then Christmas will always be what took their father away from them, and no one should have to live like that. Of course, when the Christmas period is over, I shall. I don't know why I keep shouting at them."

DOCTOR: "Because very time you see them happy, you remember how sad they're going to be, and it breaks your heart."

LILY: "Mother, come and see!"

CYRIL: "Mother! You've got to see this!"

DOCTOR: "Because what's the point in them being happy now if they're going to be sad later."

CYRIL: "Mother."

LILY: "Mother, are you coming?"

DOCTOR: "The answer is, of course, because they are going to be sad later."

I didn't like The Doctor, The Widow, and The Wardrobe very much.

But that moment sings.

[up][up][up] I think the two moments were ultimately making different points philosophically.

And I don't see how, even if that was true, it actually detracts from the TDTWATW moment.

I mean, Ten was a dick to Martha. And he saved Donna's life against her wishes in a very invasive manner. And then the story focused on how sad he was about that. So. I mean, no, he didn't seem to be happy about himself about that, but not necessarily for the right reasons, and bringing it up in a discussion of how much he liked being himself would put emphasis on that and not on Donna herself.

Which, I mean.

Davies once said that unrequited love is his favorite kind. Which says a bit about Davies, I think. He is all about tragic heroes.

Make Me a Warrior Now (A Good Man Goes to War)

The Universe Cries Out Like A Newborn (Lets Kill Hitler)

Steven Moffat is a Feminist and You Are Wrong if You Disagree

When Moffat writes a rape story (and yes what happened to Donna was a rape story) he at least has the decency to A) not try to make us sympathetic for the perpetrator; and B) make the story about the victim's recovery.

I don't think Moffat bringing it up would be very productive, because slagging off Davies in DWM would be a bad idea, especially since they are kinda friends, and taking the story at face value would be buying into it a bit much.

Sticking to Rose makes sense, because that arc has way less ethical issues in the corners.

On the other hand, it's also a form of erasure, so.

I mean, calling out Ten in the pages of Doctor Who magazine wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.
