  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Hugo and how! Is he a complete monster who willfully manipulated people and caused numerous deaths in order to rise up to the top of the company hierarchy? Or is he really the little guy seeking to right the wrongs the world has made against him and others like him? His speech to Brian in his ending suggests he had started out much worse off in Class R of the limitedly touched upon Fantastic Caste System. And after revealing this truth to Brian, he gives him the dismissal letter that will end his contract and allow him to leave the company without further trouble. But was it the truth or another ploy of his in order to gain sympathy and encourage Brian to step aside so he can take over?
    • It doesn't help that one of Hugo's flashbacks showed his interaction with Corvo and indicated that the two had agreed to work together. Hugo helped Corvo to try to hunt the Witch with the promise that Corvo would help grant his wish in return. But when Corvo discovered that Hugo's wish was for power, he attempted to placate him instead. Naturally, Hugo saw through what Corvo was doing and did not take it well.
    • The Executive Edition only adds to this. After sabotaging Brian throughout the day, putting him in life-threatening situations, stealing the weapon needed to defeat the Witch, and even poisoning Brian and breaking his glasses before abandoning him in the Witch's Lair, Hugo goes out of his way to give Brian the key to becoming head of the company. Even Brian questions his reasons for doing this after everything he had done.
  • Esoteric Happy Ending: The "Witch" and her curse are stopped, Rei Sintra is recovered and takes control of the company, Rei and Domori seemingly work things out and are sisters again, Hugo is ousted, Brian's first day of work finally comes to an end, and if you do everything right, the coworkers who actually have names can be saved. Except you've placed a 10 year old in charge of a company she hasn't indicated she even knows how to run, said company doesn't have any management remaining and has had no one actually running it for years who can help since your actions pushed the last senior-ranking person to suicide, Domori is in an experimental robot body, the Sintra family aside from Rei is already dead and never knew what happened to their daughter or that they killed her, who knows how many coworkers and innocent people have been killed that the company has swept under the rug, the implied Fantastic Caste System is still in place and is never fully addressed, the outside world is still a mess for reasons that remain unknown, and the one who caused all the chaos in the company and uncountable deaths for decades is still around as Domori's necklace and may still be in a position to cause trouble in the future. But at least Brian can have that coffee with Kate, right?
  • Moral Event Horizon: Hugo when he intentionally outs Brian as a Hunter during the Birthday Party and abandons everyone to die. Though it could be argued it already happened years before when he started getting other employees and Hunters killed in order to cement his own place in the company.
