• Moral Event Horizon: Yes, Joe is a maddeningly charismatic villain even at his worst, but he is irredeemably reprehensible at the conclusion of the book, where he prevents an outraged Beck from leaving after she discovers his box of her things he's stolen, knocks her unconscious for trying to escape, and then locks her in the cage, leading to her psychological torture and eventual murder.
• Nightmare Fuel: This book is specifically a psychological thriller told from the perspective of a criminal obsessed with someone he believes to be in love with. You should be prepared for a look into the disturbing criminal mind.
• Rooting for the Empire: It's almost impossible to dislike Joe.
• Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: To alter a phrase from Kyle Kallgren, "Is every single person in this book a loathsome cad?!?" There are maybe two people who aren't utter jackasses, and they die first. The story is an endless downward spiral of pain and torture that ends with the villain dancing away from all consequences.
