The book contains examples of:

  • Designated Hero: Eddie straddles the line between this and Villain Protagonist with his obsession with scaring Courtney who, for the most part, never really did anything malicious to him or his friends. He comes across as more of a jealous bully rather than a justified victim wanting revenge.
  • Designated Villain: In the book, aside from one past incident with bees, Courtney doesn't do anything except irritate the protagonists by being The Ace at everything. The TV version has her acting like a smug Insufferable Genius, but she still never acts with malicious intent towards the boys who are actively trying to one-up her or scare her.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Combined with her appearance in the TV series, there are few who feel that Courtney should have come back as a series regular, since she's one of the few to actually stand up against a monster and talk it to death unlike the usual protagonists who run and scream.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: At various points it looks like the episode will pull a plot twist and reveal that Courtney is actually some kind of monster. Throughout the episode, she shows a fascination with them, and argues in favor of the possibility that monsters might exist. The episode reaches its climax end... Nope, Courtney is just a normal preteen who's just really perfect.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Eddie. His obsession with scaring Courtney due to jealousy comes off as pathetic and even borders on bullying. Plus, despite being generally annoying, Courtney never actually does anything to hurt him or his friends, and most of her smug attitude can be seen as a reaction to the kids who keep trying to scare her just for the fun of it.
