YMMV / Wrath of the Black Manta

Go To

  • Older Than They Think: In the localized release, enemy informants in Stage 1 are lifted from Stan Lee and John Buscema's How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way.
  • Unintentional Period Piece: At the time the game was made in 1989 and localized in the U.S. and Europe in 1990-1991, the moral panic on drugs and crime reached a fever pitch and punitive anti-drug laws had mainstream support across the political spectrum, which is why the localization had to include the height of the War on Drugs in the late 80s and early 90s. Also, the Black Manta has to rescue kids from the dangers of drug-pushing, most of whom don't look like kids (rather, more like teenagers) and some of whom are outdated (you rescue 70s disco boys in Stage 1's New York, and 1970s Afro-haired Black boys in Rio de Janeiro). Also, one of the enemy informants you interrogate mentions drug trading in "the U.S.S.R.", which was at the height of when the Cold War was coming to an end in 1991, over a year after the game's localized release.
