  • Catharsis Factor: Regardless of the opinion of the second half of the story without him, seeing Wolfram finally perish after all the hell he's put his victims through is satisfying to see.
  • Complete Monster: Wolfram's manner and appearance belie his utter sadism. Everyone passing through Sankt Gotthard Pass must be inspected by Wolfram, the bailiff of the titular Wolfsmund, who delights in mentally and physically tormenting his victims, which include women and children. Starting the series by having a young woman executed and her body displayed, Wolfram is responsible for many atrocities, which include torturing a boy by burning the soles of his feet, and then forcing him to stand, holding his father on his shoulders to prevent the man from being hanged; forcing a little girl and her mother to undergo a search with tongs; and feeding the mother and younger brother of one of the only people to escape his clutches to ravenous wolves for an execution. It is revealed Wolfram led violent raids to kill civilians in the past and spared only two siblings, but only after putting out one eye each; revealing themselves to Wolfram years later, he claims not to remember them. Ostensibly loyal to the Austrian Hapsburg Dukedom, Wolfram admits that his only reason is for the amusement it gives him and his greatest joy in life is to cause others pain, especially after giving them hope first. Finally, when the fortress is attacked, he flees, leaving his men to fight and die against overwhelming odds, but not before killing one who suggests surrendering.
  • Draco in Leather Pants: Disturbingly, there are some fans who thinks Wolfram is the real hero of the manga and the rebels are the actual villains despite the fact the rebels have a just reason (driving away a foreign invader who's trying to take over their land) and forgetting or ignoring that Wolfram is a monster who lies, tortures and kills innocents for the fun of it. These fans even go so far saying when Wolfram has a Villainous Breakdown when he's about to be executed by the rebels for his crimes and cries that it's unfair for the Swiss to kill him and God will punish them, Wolfram fans use that as proof that he was innocent all along and was actually possessed by the Devil when that scene in question shows how much of a coward and a hypocrite Wolfram is.
  • Epileptic Trees: Following Chapter 21, many Wolfram fans hope that Wolfram will come back from the dead to have his revenge on the Swiss or Bertha, the woman Walther's friend talked with, due to her uncannily similar haircut and facial expressions to Wolfram, was Wolfram's sister seeking revenge after learning about her brother's death. However these ideas were completely jossed since the manga ends with Wolfram staying dead and the Swiss winning their freedom from the Hapsburgs. Furthermore, the whole Wolfram sister theory was jossed since it was revealed the woman was just a Swiss citizen and nobody knew that Wolfram died until the Swiss threw his body to the Hapsburgs at the end of the manga.
  • Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: Given the monstrous nature of the antagonists (especially Wolfram) and the sheer amount of bullshit that any heroic character has to suffer through, a number of readers have trouble getting through the story. It is eventually averted though, when the Swiss cantons unite to form modern Switzerland and defeat attempts by the Austrians to subdue them.
