- Ambiguously Jewish: Elphaba, for the common fan headcanons below and also since her father, the Wizard of Oz, is played by Jeff Goldblum. The same could be said for the Wizard himself and Boq, played by Jewish American actors.
- As in the stage musical version, many Jewish fans of the show have related
to Elphaba's struggles of being unfairly scapegoated and ostracized. Not only that but Elphaba has been played by many Jewish actresses over the years: Idina Menzel, Lindsay Mendez, Mandy Gonzalez, and Talia Suskauer, to name a few. So were musical composer Stephen Schwartz and playbook writer Winnie Holzman.

- Les Yay: The trailer puts a lot of focus on Elphaba and Glinda's friendship, which a lot of fans online took notice of. In particular, one scene has a shot of them sitting and Glinda resting her head on Elphaba's shoulder with the sun setting behind them, which looks quite romantic out of context.
