YMMV / Why We Fight

  • Fair for Its Day: One of the major criticisms of the series is that its discussion of the Japanese sometimes leans into full-blown xenophobia and racism. However, it also goes out of its way to praise the Chinese, talking up their accomplishments and national character, and part of why it's so hostile to Japan is very real and well-founded anger at Japanese atrocities against the Chinese.
  • Values Dissonance:
    • While the series' criticism of Japanese militarism is completely warranted, the racially-charged insults thrown at the Japanese people are downright cringeworthy nowadays.
    • To a lesser extent, the movies imply at multiple points that the German people have some kind of inborn tendency towards authoritarianism and aggression, an idea that would certainly raise eyebrows if raised just a couple of decades later.
  • Values Resonance: These movies have a firm message favoring reason, freedom, peace and equality over demagoguery, authoritarianism, warmongering and bigotry that still rings very true today.
