YMMV / Weezer (The Blue Album)

  • Fanon: Many fans think that "My Name is Jonas" was inspired by Lois Lowry's The Giver, which has a protagonist named Jonas. The band has never confirmed this, and the timeline of the novel's release versus when the song was recorded (The Giver came out in the spring of 1993, while the Blue Album was recorded in the fall of that year) is a bit tight.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • The Minimalistic Cover Art is perfect for remixing, right down to having a blue background. A good percentage of posts on the Weezer Reddit are Blue Album cover memes.
    • The "wrestle with Jimmy" line in "Say it Ain't So", particularly after it became a Game Grumps Running Gag. Comparisons to The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius are not particularly uncommon, especially since the show features a character named Carl Wheezer. One person went as far as making a video where they sing the song from Carl's perspective and impersonate Rob Paulsen's portrayal. Rivers Cuomo has even made "wrestle with Jimmy" jokes on Twitter.
    • Oddball remixes of "Buddy Holly" (and to a lesser extent "Say It Ain't So") have become a durable YouTube meme. Variations include adjusting them to swing tempo (which makes "Say It Ain't So" sound like Ska), "Buddy Holly" entirely autotuned to the key of C, "Buddy Holly" with all of the lyrics placed in alphabetical order (bizarrely, the word "guardian" ends up in the exact same spot as the original), "Buddy Holly" with only the first three words of each line sung, and many others. The accompanying visuals are usually redone versions of the cover art, as mentioned above.
