YMMV / Weekend at Poison Lake

Go To

  • Aluminum Christmas Trees: There is an actual Poison Lake in real life; specifically in Lassen County, California. It's probably harmless to drink or swim in that one, though.
  • Ass Pull: The moss-man scenario from this book has you being stalked by a mysterious cryptid, the moss-man of Poison Lake, with an ending revealing that the moss-man is actually your cousin hired by your parents to surprise you on your birthday because "you liked scary things so much"... you know, the same moss-man who tried to drown your dog in front of you, and puts you through plenty of life-threatening situations?
  • Moral Event Horizon: The Bittermans cross this when they show they're willing to not just poison a young child, but will also try to drown them in order to keep the stolen jewels to themselves.
  • Scrappy Mechanic: Not many readers were fond of this book, because its luck-based gameplay gimmick was extremely confusing and illogical.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: The four individual stories (the Bigfoot plotline, the ice cream-obsessed aliens, the stolen jewels, and the moss-man) are largely considered interesting on their own, but the Lucky Number gimmick severely drags them down and hampers their enjoyability due to the randomness of the luck-based gameplay gimmick affecting which ending you receive.
