* AuthorTract: ''Rogue Trip'' is a massive one against [[ThisLoserIsYou older fans who dislike the cadets.]] The episode even stops at one point to have the core pilots praise the cadets and how essential they are.
* ContestedSequel: Many fans are quite happy to forget this show existed, citing the poor animation, retcons from the original series, and unlikable cadets. However, it does have a small but vocal contingent of fans who cite the attempts at AdaptationExpansion of the mythos from the original series making it a worthy sequel to the original series. Said fans were none too pleased when WEP didn't attempt to [[LeftHanging make a second season following up on the cliffhanger which ended the first season]] and instead [[WesternAnimation/VoltronLegendaryDefender reboot the series from the ground up.]]
* CreatorsPet: The cadets pretty much check off every box to qualify, with Vince's Voltcom powers being essential to victory almost immediately. Several episodes even have the main pilots lamenting how they wish the cadets were there to help out. Considering that [[WesternAnimation/VoltronLegendaryDefender the following series has nary a mention of Daniel, Vince, or Larmina, the fandom disagreed.]]
* ExiledFromContinuity: No mention of the Vehicle Voltron force. The Drule Empire (if you can still call it that) now appears to be centered around planet Doom. The Vehicle series left a few loose ends. Hazar and Dorma were now working to help the liberated Drules find a new home. Emperor Zeppo and Viceroy Throk escaped and vowed to return.
* FandomNod: [[http://media.animevice.com/uploads/0/167/190696-500x_voltron_girl_super.jpg This]] adorable cosplayer shows up in the background in "Dradin, Baby Dradin".
* MoralEventHorizon: Sky Marshal Wade in "Wanted and Unwanted," when he deliberately opens the airlock so [[ThrownOutTheAirlock his prisoners will be sucked into space]].
** The same episode also revealed that Wade forced [[TheAtoner Cloak]] to build him [[InvisibilityCloak stealth camouflage]] for his prison and promptly rewards him by using the very same technology to commit genocide on his planet.
** Lampshaded in "Hungry for Voltron," as Lance and Keith decide to end things with Wade after he "crosses a line," presumably by trapping Allura and trying to kill her.
* NightmareFuel: [[spoiler:A holographic projection of Sky Marshall Wade's face replacing Voltron's. The way he says that he'll "Form the head" doesn't help.]]
* OlderThanTheyThink: Swapping mecha components for different forms actually goes all the way back to the classic ''Manga/GetterRobo''.
* {{Ship Tease}}: With Daniel and Larmina.
** Carrying over from the other series, Keith and Allura. Although they're all but confirmed as a couple by the end of the first season.
* SuspiciouslySimilarSong: One of the background tracks sounds a lot like "Enterprising Young Men" from the J.J. Abrams ''Film/StarTrek'' reboot.
* TheyChangedItNowItSucks: Dudley is a walking parody of this.
