YMMV / Vaincre ou Mourir

  • Critical Dissonance: Judging by scores on Allociné (the closest thing France has to Rotten Tomatoes), the film has been largely panned by critics with an average score of 1.4 out of 5 (a great deal of this has to do with the very politically charged nature of the film, with the left-leaning press being the most condemning/vitriolic at that. Assassin's Creed: Unity and Les Visiteurs: Bastille Day faced similar local political backlash for their allegedly sympathetic portrayals of the royals and/or nobility, although nowhere as extensive). Meanwhile, audience scores are much more positive (3.9 out of 5).
  • No Such Thing as Bad Publicity: The film's creators fully expected most of the mainstream French press to thrash the film for political reasons, since that also means they talked about it period, and thus gave it publicity.
  • Spiritual Successor: There was a previous film about the Wars in Vendée part of The French Revolution that was connected to the Puy du Fou park, 1989's Vent de Galerne. That film's 18th century village set ended up becoming part of the park.
