- Unintentional Period Piece: Obviously it took place during a period of resurgence in country music. But more noticeably it was during the Texas oil boom when Bud was just one of many who fled the countryside to take refinery jobs in the city.
- Values Dissonance / Esoteric Happy Ending: Bud physically and emotionally abuses Sissy throughout the movie. Yet it’s seen as a happy ending that they get back together in the end.
