- Heartwarming Moments: Sonya's final speech. She tells her uncle that, no matter how rubbish their life is, they can continue to work, and then they will finally rest.We shall rest. We shall hear the angels. We shall see heaven shining like a jewel. We shall see all evil and all our pain sink away in the great compassion that shall enfold the world. Our life will be as peaceful and tender and sweet as a caress. I have faith; I have faith. My poor, poor Uncle Vanya, you are crying! You have never known what happiness was, but wait, Uncle Vanya, wait! We shall rest. We shall rest. We shall rest.
- Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: The play deals with a bunch of depressing subjects in a dreary atmosphere, there's angst all round, Love Hurts, and a Downer Ending that reinforces just how futile the main characters' lives are (barring the speech at the very, very end). Understandably, people would find themselves giving up on it sooner or later.
- The Woobie: Sonya — she works so hard, and is so lovely, and yet women gossip in church about how horribly plain she is, and Astrov does not love her back one jot.
