YMMV / Uncharted Waters: New Horizons

Go To

  • Even Better Sequel: The general consensus is that, as good as the first game had been, New Horizons easily surpasses it in every aspect.
  • Port Overdosed: was released for all three MS-DOS platforms (IBM PC, PC-98 and FM Towns), Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo, Sony PlayStation, Sega Saturn, Wii U, and as of 2017, Windows.
  • Polished Port: The SNES version is widely hailed as the best port out of all the platforms the game was released for, due to the game taking full advantage of the SNES' SPC700 sound chip and using high quality instrument samples to produce superior quality music, as well as the SNES' advanced graphical capabilities to produce more vibrant graphics and advanced raster effects.
  • Porting Disaster:
    • The MS-DOS PC version is considered this. The game music is only optimized for AdLib music cards and has no support for wavetable-enabled cards like the Gravis Ultrasound or SoundBlaster AWE32 (both which could give the PC port a chance to sound as good, if not better, than the SNES version if the game had supported them and the PC has said cards installed), had duller colors compared to the SNES version due to the game using EGA graphics instead of VGA, and even failed at simple tasks such as smooth screen scrolling. Ultimately it appears that the MS-DOS port is just a quick touch-up of the PC-98 version of the game.
    • The Windows port released in 2017 is basically the PC-98 version sandwiched in an emulator. And the UI isn't even unicode-friendly and uses the legacy Shift-JIS encoding, causing the menu to appear scrambled on Western systems; and even requires periodic virtual disk-swapping. Thankfully however the game itself isn't really affected by this as it’s running inside an emulator.
