From the movie:

  • Awesome Music: The incredibly eerie, tango-like main theme, taken from the Suite Punta del Este, by 20th century Tango Nuevo composer Astor Piazzola.
  • Adaptation Displacement: The movie is nowadays much more well known than the French short film that inspired it.
  • Diagnosed by the Audience: While James Cole is right about the time travel, it's implied he does have a genuine mental illness.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Cole's fellow prisoner Jose probably has less than five minutes of screen time, but is still a much-discussed character for his own, lightly touched upon off-screen adventures on behalf of the scientists, and how he serves as a Foil to Cole for his weary acceptance of the situation.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • This quote:
  • Narm Charm: The airport shooting of James Cole, anyone? Pretty narmy by all standards, but by the final time the scene is played, it's turned into a Tear Jerker.
  • One-Scene Wonder: Frederick Strother as L.J. Washington, a paranoid schizophrenic who believes he is a visitor from outer space trapped in the asylum. He rather creepily explains that he can see through his own insanity as James realizes he likely has the same condition of suffering "unnamed realities".
  • Spoiled by the Format: Some versions of the movie have subtitles that label the voice on the recording "Kathryn's voice", despite Cole specifically saying the voice was unidentifiable later in the movie.
  • The Woobie: Cole. His absolutely hellish Trauma Conga Line of a life and frayed mental state makes it really hard not to want to give the poor guy a hug.

From the show:

  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Deacon the "psychopathic Han Solo", who was promoted to the main cast after season one.
