YMMV / Trainwreck: Woodstock '99

  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • Michael Lang and John Scher's reminiscences on the Sunday night disaster and its aftermath. Are they trying to put on a brave face for the camera, or do they genuinely believe they bear no responsibility? Scher especially seems to be completely out of touch by the series end, refusing to acknowledge how his failures to plan and budget the festival set the stage (no pun intended) for the disaster. Michael does at least take responsibility for the violence against women attendees at the end.
    • Is Fred Durst responsible for the mayhem that occurred during his set? Or was the crowd already rowdy to the point where it would have happened anyway?
  • Nausea Fuel: By the time Sunday came around, all the drinking water was contaminated with fecal matter from the porta-potties due to the smashed pipes. Seeing the clips of people using the water, and even rolling in the mud (which was contaminated with feces too) will probably make you feel sick.
  • Nightmare Fuel: The footage. All of it. There are no actors, there are no staged elements. All of the footage you see is genuine.
    • The idea that a large group of people are having fun, and are oblivious to people getting sexually assaulted or raped.
    • Seeing the remaining audience rioting when Jimi Hendrix was displayed on a screen. To see everyday people become infected with a mob mentality and succumb to pure rage and unleashing that rage through property damage is distressing.
    • One attendee’s description of contracting trench mouth from drinking contaminated water.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: John Scher’s comments on the rapes and sexual assaults that occurred uncomfortably come across as Victim-Blaming, especially when he implies that the women who went topless were asking for it.
