YMMV / Touken Danshi and The Order Of The Phoenix

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Dumbledore's relenting to the saniwa's insistence to send a squad of bodyguards with Harry can be seen as less a successful persuasion on the latter's part and more Dumbledore's agreeing out of worry for the rest of the Citadel, as detailed under Fridge Horror.
  • Canon Defilement: This fic plays fast-and-loose with both canons featured.
    • For starters, you cannot take away the magic of an HP wizard or witch.
    • You cannot kill a Boggart, they're immune to violence, and they cannot transform into multiple people or things at a time (the one seen in the fic should only be able to turn into Gryffindor period, not Gryffindor, a table, Hizamaru's sword form, a vial of potion plus shackles restraining Hizamaru's limbs).
    • The dining room in the OotP headquarters where a confidential meeting is held is said to be warded against intruders and eavesdroppers, despite that term's not being used in HP canon.
    • The Citadel and sword army have nothing to do with the Imperial family; they are outright stated to be under orders from the government, the Imperial family is never mentioned in TouRabu canon, and they would have no political power by the time the game is set in.
    • Lastly, the two canons are 3 centuries apart. Even if Hogwarts survives into the year 2205 and is accessible to TouRabu characters, they won't be able to meet HP characters in the present, who would have been 3 centuries dead.
  • Designated Hero: Harry and the TouRabu crew's hero status is shaky at best -– they are incredibly snobbish, demanding and disrespectful towards the HP side despite supposedly being in a position of representatives of their country. Harry has implausible capabilities, looks down on Hogwarts and the wizarding Britain and his biological family despite their actions' not really deserving of such reaction, the saniwa is an obnoxious meddler to the max who verbally attacks Dumbledore into allowing Harry special treatment, and Higekiri and Hizamaru are quick to threaten violence on the British for looking at the Japanese wrong.
  • Designated Villain: The HP side is treated as wrong whether the treatment is warranted or not. The fic acts like the Potters are Abusive Parents for one act of putting Harry in the Dursleys' hands and Dumbledore is painted as unreasonable for expecting Harry to finish his required schooling and get along with other students.
  • Fridge Horror: Harry in this fic is royalty and his companions effectively royal servants. With their being in such a diplomatically important position, it's all too scary to imagine the disastrous effect on Anglo-Japanese relations given their behavior.
    • Given the saniwa is willing to bring the entire Citadel over to camp on Hogwarts grounds if Dumbledore doesn't give in, it's also pretty scary to imagine what this does to the lives of other swords if this plan is put into motion. They would all be forced to move to another country against their will for an entire Hogwarts school year to participate in negotiations that they may not want to be involved in, assault innocent foreigners they don't know, and contribute to the worsening of foreign relations all for the comfort of a single student, all while nobody would be left to defend history. Nice Job Breaking It, Hero.
  • Fridge Logic: Best not to think too hard about how Higekiri and Hizamaru can be Heian period treasures and Medieval European magical artifacts at the same time
    • For that matter, how a white British boy could be made one of the Japanese Imperial family, a luxury common Japanese people don't get.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Say what you will about Harry's moral grounds, but the Dursleys inarguably crossed it by leaving him to die in Japan for no reason.
  • So Bad, It's Good: One can have a good laugh at the totally serious approach the fic takes towards a premise as wacky as TouRabu meets Harry Potter if they don't find the thinly-veiled, hardly justified HP-bashing TouRabu favoritism and racist implications just plain annoying.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Sword boys in Britain. The ramifications of a squad's being ordered to move to another country and act as envoys against their job experience and possibly their will, of having to spend a Hogwarts school year in a country whose language they likely don't speak and whose culture and society are nothing like theirs, all while in a precarious position where their actions reflect on their country could be explored to full effect if the fic isn't overwhelmingly focused on Harry and painting HP in a bad light.
  • Unintentionally Sympathetic: Dumbledore; he wants Harry to finish his studies and not become an outcast at Hogwarts, but he's portrayed as in the wrong and bullied for it.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Harry and the TouRabu cast are meant to be seen as confidently assertive, but in practice they're rude, arrogant and demanding, and not above assaulting and practically threatening war on Hogwarts staff and other British people for being unwilling to concede to their most unreasonable demands.
